P'kal blade numbering

It was always my understanding that new Spyderco models have the first 200(?) pieces numbered for collectors, but that custom collaboration models are further numbered up to 1,000 pieces. After all, I have owned a number of Spydies with numbers well over 200.

I got my P'kal on Friday, and there is no number on it. I thought I was pretty early to get one. Did I, in fact, get one past the 1,000 mark, or was the P'kal not numbered past the collector's club?

Does Spyderco still number up to 1,000 on custom collaborations?

Just wondering... :D

No, they stopped doing that a couple years ago. IIRC, the Gunting was the last custom collaboration model numbered that way (but I could be wrong on that). Now only the first 200 are numbered, even on the collaboration models.

Thanks for the correction: guess I'm out of the loop these days. The change must have been past the Gunting though: I once had Ronin #313, and the Ronin was released past the Gunting, was it not?

Deacon's correct, only the first 200 are numbered now, and I know for certain the Gunting went higher than 200, but I'm not sure if it was the last or not.

Speaking of blade numbering, I dismantled my P'Kal just because I wanted to see what it looks like inside, and there was an engraving of 4/07 on the pivot area of the blade.

Not sure what it means, possibly it's birthdate, but I just thought I'd mention it.:p

Very interesting. I was considering disassembling mine as well: how far did you go? Did you actually separate the handle into halves, or did you simply remove the blade from the handle? Any problems with the ball lock: is it relatively captured, or will something pop free upon disassembly?

I opened it enough to get a close look at the ball lock. I didn't have the guts to remove the blade, because the tolerances on that pivot are very tight, and I wasn't sure I'd be able to put it back. The ball seems to be contained within the cage, and I don't think it'll go flying across the room if it's taken out(like the Dodo always did;) )
