P'Kal Wave Pin Hole... Gap?

P'kal arrived in the mail today. Love it, but noticed something that bothered me. It may seem minor to some, but for the money...

Top of the blade, where the wave pin enters the blade (threaded hole), there is tiny gap to the side of the pin... the side where the spyderco logo is. It's very tiny, less than a mm. The gap is not present on the other side. I called the retailer to ask about this. After looking carefully at another one in stock, he noticed the same gap on the same side of the blade.

Anyone know if this gap is intentional?

I tried to take pics, but the gap is so tiny my camera couldn't focus on it.

I would think the price of the P'kal is a factor of it's limited sales potential, material quality, design development costs, tooling costs, general production costs, and possibly payment to whoever at Shivworks collaborated on the design. Its fit and finish are typical for a Golden built Spyderco, which is to say it's built to be a tool, not a work of art.

 Spyderco is not CRK and never tried to be. You will find every manner of tiny gaps, uneven spots and roughly finished areas on nearly every Spyderco and any other brand in that price range and even much higher.

If you want perfect fit and finish, you have to pay for it, and it costs much, much more than your P'Kal did.

da99er. Other than that how do you like it? Has it been a good knife to you? How does it cut? Would you recommend it?

My Dear Friend,

BTW, The gap is angular and not circular. Almost rectangular.

I might hazard a guess here. It is probably a milled spot used to provide a flat surface for starting to drill out the recess for the Wave pin. I can't imagine how they would consistently drill a hole into the top of the blade unless there was a flat spot available to start the drill bit.

Just a guess...

Function vs Form, the ole battle. I get it. I think this knife is amazing. And it does function perfect for all its intents/purposes. Razor sharp and feels great in the p'kal grips as well as the normal cutting grip. I have to say, I was hesitant about the lock, but man.. it's solid. Check it out when you can. I only hope the the clear bearing cage doesn't turn yellow on me... there i go with aesthetics again.

I understand where the money goes. I guess that's why I feel since the cost IS based on all those factors, it should be flawless. I think i'm being too picky though :-). I'm a former watch collector, and look at the details too much. Don't take this as a ding to Spyderco (I love em). This is meerly an observation I made, and was just curious to know if the gap was present on others... and is intentional. The rest of the knife is flawless, and though not intended to be a work of art. I think this one is.

Makes sense. Hmmm.

I checked mine out and have the same flaw as yours does. Doesn't bother me at all. Still an awesome knife.
