Place for acronyms?

maximus otter Gents,

You aren't talking about acronyms; you're talking about initials.

An acronym is a word made up from the initial letters of other words, e.g. laser or NATO.

How would you pronounce EDC, BM or ROTFLMAO?

Well, Mr. Otter, I guess you haven't been traveling abroad lately. We don't speak the Queen's English over here. In fact, we learn to pronounce ROTFLMAO, EDC, BM, and other WWTMVITRP (Words Without Too Many Vowels In The Right Places) in KINDERGARTEN!!!! So there!

So, maybe, you are TECHNICALLY correct. Maybe we Americans don't know what an acronym is. But I speak "compound initials" fluently! So if I can pronounce them, then I guess they're ACRONYMS! Hah!

By the way, in case you were wondering, WWTMVITRP is pronounced just the way it sounds.

Dear Mr. Otter

I would like to invite you to join the AAAAA. Even though you (nor I) are not american, you should be a member.

BTW (!), dont you know what AAAAA is?

American Association Against the Abuse of Acronyms.

PS. I once joined a Unix traning session in London - where the Queens English is spoken. The british teacher kept pronouncing the technical abbreviation "ioctl" as "I - octal". The real meaning is "input/output control". So even british people can pronounce weird abbreviations.

Edited due to spelling misdages.

According to Les, it was a term used when he was in the Army (Line of Departure/Control), meaning that when you crossed that line you were in enemy territory.

Oh, I get it. Sort of like CTR.

(Crossing the Rubicon).

Seriously, if the mods/admins are interested I could compile a list of knife-specific abreviations that I don't understand right now along with the definitions as I learn them. Since I'm a newbie I'd be doing it anyway.
