Does Spyderco make a plain edge Stainless steel handle Native? I have not seen one anywhere.

Yes, they did, but they were discontinued several years ago and are quite difficult to find. Only the CE version is still in production. Photo below shows one along with a blue "Forum Model" C78 Native III.

FWIW, if you intend to use it, the FRN version is considerably lighter, more ergonomic, provides far better traction, is much easier to find in PE (even WalMart carries them), and considerably less expensive.

jbarch, I just found one a couple of days ago at an online resaler. I had been looking for one for about 4 or 5 months with no luck. I just happened to this particular site and saw they had one listed on their site. I called to make sure and was told it was the last one they had and I immediately ordered it. It should be here Mon or Tue next week. They are very hard to find but keep looking you may turn one up like I did. Half the fun is the searching. Good Luck.

Thanks pkdmslf -- I guess there's hope. Did you get it through a google search or what?

yesterday i've seen one on bladeart.com but i would check if it really is a plain edge and not a common CE version Its AUS 10 steel and the price is about double wallmart!!

cheers a dutchie:cool:

Is it my imagination or are the blades different sizes on those two Natives? I am getting a used one in a trade soon and it is probably the Wal-Mart version I think. Which blade shape will it likely have?

I really think the blade on the SS knife looks more proportioned.

Yes - Two different knives........

The blue FRN model is the Native III - Not only is the blade of a slightly different configuration, so is the handle....and the clip: Produced in Japan.

The SS handle model is the regular Native, produced in the USA.

The Wal-Mart Native I picked up this weekend comes with an S30V blade. Looks like the Native III above has VG 10. I couldn't read the tang on the stainless steel knife.

I like my new Native more and more every day.

I found it at bladeart.com. I called to make sure it was a PE and that they actually had it on hand. According to them I got their last one. I checked the website again and they have since removed it. They do have a blue G-10 Blade Forums model for sale though. I just found a black blade S30V PE yesterday and ordered it as well. I'm still thinking about a blue G-10 handled version but without the blade lettering. Oh, yeah and a tan Operation Iraqui Freedom model too and a.... you get my point?

So you were the lucky one who snagged the last one from them pkdmslf .
Congrats on your find and happy hunting!!
At newgraham they have black blade ones left but only the SE version 'in which i'm not interested. (i prefer plain edge knives) .

There is a thread on upgrading the native 3 on the spydercoforum.
I think this will take a while and not sure when and if there will be an upgrade/date on the native 3/4.

here in europe they ask ridiculous prices for the Iraqi ones. I'll leave them for the grunts in the field. Let's hope for their save return!!!

cheers

Does anyone know which model has CPM440v on it?
C41 Native - I've three with G-10 handles and all of them have CPM 440 V blades (C41GPBL Native Blue G-10 + C41GPI Native blue abalone shell inlay + C41GPSI Native burnt orange/root-beer shell inlay).

That's pure sex!!

Have you ever disengage the lock on those by sqeezing the handle real hard? I've been looking at the new native for a while but decided against them because of the lock issue with mine.

I received the SS handled PE Native today. Great looking knife! The box shows some wear but the knife itself looks perfect. Woo-Hooo! I also found a black PE S30V blade model Sunday. Looks like I got the last one from that site as well because it shows "Out of Stock" today. Another Woo-Hoo!. Now, where can I find the tan Operation Iraqi Freedom Native and those two inlaid Natives that Peter1960 shows???

I've tried to on purpose, to test out the "boyle dent" or whatever... Seems to work fine as it didn't disengauge even slightly.

Over the years, the C41 Native has come in FRN with blades of 440A (the "BRK 1st Generation Native"), GIN-1 (the first "official" Native sold by Spyderco), 440V, and S30V (the current version, sold at Wal-Mart and elsewhere). All were made in the USA. There were also blue G-10 and black G-10 with shell inserts and 440V blade versions, again made in the USA. There is also a Japanese made all stainless steel version with AUS-10 and recently VG-10 blades.

The C78 Native is made in Japan and, to date, has only ever been made in FRN with VG-10 blade.

The C78 blade is slightly "taller" than the C41 blade.

For more detailed info, and photos, see the Natives page on my website.
