Plain edge or serrated?

I own knives with plain, serrated, and combo edges, but about 70 to 90 percent of the time I prefer plain.

The only other knife user among my friends, who is an LEO, prefers tanto blades with partial serrations. He currently carries plain edge tanto folders, but has told me he only got plain because no serrations were available when he bought them (BM CQC-7 and CRKT KISS).

Although it seems to take criticism on these forums, I tend to like the 420 HC steel. It's not my favorite, but it is a pretty good performance steel that is relatively easy to maintain, IMO.

Probably 40% of my knives are part serrated, and only those with 31/2-4" blades. Here on the farm, serrations can be quite handy. But I always carry 2 knives, a traditional and a "tactical", along with a Leatherman. I guess if I could only carry one knife it would have a plain edge, since that's what I use the most.

I prefer plain blades for cutting and appearance; but my "uses" generally benefit from mostly plain (2/3 - 3/4) and a small serrated section aft. Rope and hose certainly give way to serrated better but cardboard is the real-life everyday material that sees my serrations.

Sure, carrying two knives is a great solution, but in one knife a small section of serrations behind and suitably sized (for intended uses) plain section is probably most useful.

As to the sharpening issue, serrations really do not have to be as sharp as the plain section because, as previously stated, it's basically a saw.

BTW my nickel bolster 110 and a larger plain blade fixed are usually with me afield; serves me very well.
