Plain forward curving khukuri -- no engraving

Uncle Bill, on other threads, a number of forumites have discussed their experiences with the FWCK, and there seems to be a degree of dissatisfaction with the engraving, which tends to get embedded with tree sap and other matter. This has been my own experience with my FWCK. Though I am very proud of my engraved khuk and would never want to part with it, I would like to have a plain version for use as a real "working knife." So, how about the possibility of a special order for a non-engraved FWCK? Perhaps a few other forumites would also be interested. What do you think?

Hi Steven:

Let's see how many takers we get. We can do it, I think. Sanu loves to scratch the blades, though. It may be difficult to get him to do it without putting on all the hatchmarks but we will try. You know how hardheaded the kamis can be at times.

Khukuri FAQ

I have other khukuris for mundane uses.

Surya, Chandra, Tara ( Sun, Moon, and Stars ) is my "Excalibur". It would not be so without the hot forged engraving.

Sometimes the guys seem to link "high quality" to "extremely decorated".

It ain't always so...the term "Japanese aesthetic" has been kicked around...I think it applies some here.

There will always be a market for "extrordinarily decorated" pieces but I'd be willing to bet it's smaller than for "ultrafunctionals", at least in the US.

That's certainly my strong preference. Except for those Yin/Yangs which don't interfere in any way, or that one area of "go crazy" decoration area on the "special project".

I have a few takers so I'll place the order and see what Sanu does with it. Remember he is hatchmark crazy so this will not be easy for him to do.

The fact is, if you come up with a plain bladed forward curve, there goes my remission from HIKV! *I*will*have*no*choice* but to get one as a practice/training khuk for sun, moon, and stars.

I like the decorations. The Khukuri is not subject to the constraints of the minimalist aesthetic. It's from Nepal, it should be decorated the Nepali way. The Taj Mahal is decorated lavishly, stupas all over Nepal are also. This isn't Shinto or Zen, it's Hindu and Tibetan Bhuddism. Gods with a zillion arms and demons with tusks and all that. Not tatami mats and blades undecorated except for the hamon.

Of course, you can have yours however you like and I won't think any less of you

. Just my opinion.

"Oh, a magic khukuri. Why didn't you say so?"

Kaka,

Would the weight of the plain forward curving khukuri be the same as the engraved version?

I would like to get something clear in my own thoughts and mind about the terminology of the FWCK.

I have seen the pix on all of these and my 18th.Century is real close to a forward curving Khukuri and I think it qualifies as one although I see a straight line on the forward curving from the butt to where it starts.... However....

In some of the old pix and also in some pix I have in magazines and books there is a style of Khukuri that is not only "forward curving" But is curved from the buttcap to the tip.

Some of these look as if the are a perfect arc.
Others look as if they were drawn with a parabolic curve with a little more arc at one end or the other.
The handles on these blend in and are part of the whole. There aren't any straight lines on these.

Sooooo.Are these two different Khukuris?...And....

Does this mean that there are three different styles, the angled, forward curving and full curving?
A good example of one of these full curved knives is on page 39 of Knives 98.

If so that would be really interesting as to how a full curved Khukuri would work.

I have placed an order for the plain blade version of the forward curving. Give us a month or two.

Yvsa you are dead right. There are two versions of the forward curving model. The full arc and the forward curving as we make it. Getting a handle fitted on that full arc model is not the easiest thing to do as you might well imagine.

Khukuri FAQ

Jim Marsh,

The FWCK's sweet spot transmits a lot of force. It might be quite similar in concept to your Outsider.

Information please -- In terms of basic weight, size, and shape, what's the difference between a FWCK and an 18th Century khuk? I know there's a diffference, but I can't tell what it is just by looking at pictures. I have a FWCK and will be ordering an 18th Century in a month or two, but would like to know the difference before ordering. Thanks for any info.
