What's your preference and why?

I have a few knives with serrated edges, but I always go back to the plain edge types.

The only serrated edged knives I'll own are steak knives. Everything else is plain.

Plain edge all the way! Serrations are nice but they're far too limited in use when compared with a nice sharp plain edge. I'm probably in the weird minority, but I only like serrations on my fishing knives.

I go plain edge.

A good sharp plain edge will do anything serrations can do IMHO.

depends on what the knife is going to be used for.

the serrations on the esee knives are very easy to sharpen in comparison to most others i've used.

for a work knife around the farm i use a folder with serrations, just cuts bailing twine much easier. i've been using the hest for the last few days and its a very handy tool for farm work. heavy enough to cut well, the prybar is perfect for pulling out fence staples, and the bottle opener makes a good thumb rest when cutting. then of course you can pop the top on the beer in the cooler.

take it easy

I only purchase plain edge knives. Serrations are excellent for cutting up fibrous material such as rope, but for almost all daily tasks (opening boxes, food preparation, yard work) plain edge knives are superior.

Over the years I've moved almost entirely to a plain edge in all my knives. I can't recall a time yet I found myslef thinking, "damn, I wish this were serrated."

I still like my serrated knives, but just prefer the plain overall.

I prefer plain edge for most uses. If you’ve never had a serrated ESEE blade, check out my review on the serrated ESEE-5 passaround at the top of the forum. I don’t like most serrations, but if I were to buy one, it would be on an ESEE blade no doubt.

ESEE serrations take care of the "hard to sharpen" and "snag on everything" issues.

Plain edge for me. I had a knife with a combo (Gerber LMF2) and I had a horrible time trying to sharpen the serrations. 99% of the time I had no need for the serrations so I figure I'll make due w/o one.

I do have a leatherman charge TI that I carry with me sometimes which does have a serrated blade on it if I really need one.

With all that said, the serrations on the ESEE knives look a lot easier to sharpen than the ones on other blades.

Plain edge. It is really dependent upon what the knife will be used for though. I can see where a fully serrated blade would be beneficial. However, a combo edge would never be useful to me - too little plain edge and serrated edge to do either job. It has to be full serrated or full plain. (Plain for me)
