Plain or Serrated????

Plain Edge for me, if I was using the knife to just cut cordage/rope I would carry a serrated blade and that is about the only time.

I carry a Spyderco rescue in H1 steel with a plain edge as a river knife and it cuts rope and anything else as good as anything else, and better than some of the dedicated serrated river knives my other instructors carry. If you had to cut someone out of their boat 'cos they were pinned and having a bad day then maybe a serrated blade would be better. I have always thought that serrations would be better towards the tip of the knife and keep the sharp bit handy to the hilt where it is more useful for carving and slicing but such is the whims of fashion. I do not own a knife with a serrated edge apart from a small CRKT stiff kiss mdp...that one lives in my fishing kit. Between 5 RC knives and two Fallknivens they are all plain edges and cut great.

I use to only carry combo edges due to the "best of both worlds" idea. Eventually, I realized that for combo blades you don't really get enough of either. The pain to sharpen SE edges aren't really an issue for me anymore since I purchased the sharpmaker a few years back.

Currently, I prefer knives with plain edges. I can get them hair whittling sharp and they have never let me down. I have a Spyderco H1 Salt in SE I keep in my BOB since if you have to well bug out, you never know what you might need to cut. Other then that, I have a Spyderco H1 SE ladybug on my keychain for anything fibrous I might need to cut. Otherwise, everything gets cut with my Small insingo sebenza.

Plain edge for me. I have owned a few serrated knives and always sell them off. I had a RC6 that was partially serrated and removed the serrations. I do think that ESEE does a fine job with their serrations, just not for me, to each his own.

I have always preferred Combo edges. For me the serrated part can do super heavy cutting work while maintaining more edge and can tear stuff while I can use the straight edge for finer work.

I am generally not a fan of serrations but ESEE's serrations are different than anything I have used. They cut them in such a way that they sharpen quite easily with no extra equipment or new techniques. I am digging them.

I really don't have a favorite but I do find when I buy a folder I like the combo edge and when I buy a larger fixed blade I tend to go with the plain edge.

That's exactly what I like. Combo edges on folders are great.

Fixed blades i like plain edges, although as others have stated if it keeps a good edge will work fine for most anything.
Folding knives i like fully serrated. Definately helps cut rope, cargo straps, net, suff like that.
