I am sure that this comes up alot but here goes.

My fathers and law has access to a large supplie of used planner knives and saw blades, both circular and band saw blades. I know many planner blades are D2 and many saw blades are L6. Is there any way to be sure of what type steel they are? D2 and L6 are great knife steel if properly heat treated right?

I would like to use them because I asked my father in law to get them for me and free is about as cheap as you can get! I have leared more about different steel and heat treating sence I asked him and dont wanna waste time making a knife out of a steel that I am not sure of. Also dont wanna tick him off by buying steel and not using the suff he got for me.

any way to test or have steel analized? How much would it cost?

Your assumptions are poor. Many planer knives are high speed steels like M2 . Saw blades are rarely L6.This has been discussed often here but the myth goes on.There are places to get analysis ,someone will add sources.

member matt doyle can test steel for you. i just sent him an email with a link to this thread

The only time I've run into L6 , or rather what I suspect was L6, was in old dragsaw blades. What led me to that suspician was how the blades air hardened rather easily.

Other than an analysis, contact the mfr if possible and ask what the steel is. They can tell you, but only for their blades.
