Im planning on going to the great smokey mountain national park in tenn/nc at the end of may. I was just wondering if anyone has been there around this time and has any idea what the conditions will be like. I am mainly worried about weather and I have also heard that ticks are bad this time of year. I have only camped in that area once and it was later in the summer. Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I camped up there last weekend with a couple of buddies. We hiked a trail called Porter's Creek and camped at the end of it. It was a blast. I think we had a high of 70 something and at night it only got down to around 40. It did rain on the hike back out though. About my only complaint is that the trail is well known for wildflowers. They were beautiful, but that also made it very crowded. There were people everwhere, taking pictures etc. Once we got to the campsite it thinned out though. It was still too early for ticks when I went, but there were several campsites closed due to heavy bear activity. You'll have a great time.

You camping or hiking or what? And how late in may? Your best bet is to call the rangers that work up there a few days before you go. There on the ground and can make any little cautions or suggestions that might help you out, even better than just watching the standard weather report for the area. Also bear activities/problems if there are any and water level and availability can be nice to have in the back of your mind.

One thing I do know about the smokeys is that at the higher elevetions the weather can do weird stuff.

I can PM you a number for the folks there if you like.

Straight answer is if you have a lightweight fleece and convertable pants youll probably be more than O.K. But check anyway and plan for expected conditions NOT the season your going in;)

thanks runsalone, that number would be great. I am leaving the last week in may and staying for 10 days or so. were taking a car full of stuff so I should be prepared for whatever might happen. Our hikes will all be day hikes and we will do all our camping at the basecamp.

Heres the # for the permit office: 865-436-1297
And the Headquarters office I believe: 865-436-1200

These are both from my Trails illustrated map revised 2007.

If your car camping and packing some extra clothes you should be good to go. Sounds like an awesome trip! Let us know how it goes and take lots of pics!!;)
