Planning in buying an HI khukuri

I went and ordered the WWII and Chiruwa AK, and two purses (for the wife of course! Otherwise, she would have killed me with my own knife collection).

You can admit that the purse was for you. Nobody will call you a sissy if your carrying a khukri...;);):D

Seriously, great choices, please keep us informed...

The big WWII is still my fave. Although, if I were going to be hiking any distance I'd probably grab the 15" AK or even the 12" siru. Nice first khuks you got there.

Thanks! I figured it was about time to get some real ones (my first "khukuri was a CS). I explored both the HI and Tora blades but chose to go with HI because of the character (read through their website on their kamis, Bill and Yangdu Martino, and the anecdotes attached to all the pictures) and personal touch of the company.
Now begins the hardest part, waiting for my khukuris to arrive...

Razor, is the Chiruwa you're ordering the 16.5" or 18"? The 16.5" CAKs are pretty popular here. They are often said to have the chopping power of an 18"AK while being better balanced due to the Chiruwa tang, which would have some in the combat category.

I'm very much in love with the Uddha sword that was on sale, is there any chance of that item popping up on the site for purchase instead of these one time things?

Write to Yangdu and ask. I wanted a Falcata earlier this year (they're shown on the Special Runs page), so I wrote to her. It turned out that one had just arrived, she quoted me a price, and I bought it. Yangdu may tell you to keep checking back if she doesn't have what you want in-stock, but it doesn't mean that you can't get an item just because she doesn't have sufficient quantities to list it on the Web site.

I went with the 18"

I checked through the "Special Runs" section and didn't find the Uddha sword on there. I think I will have to ask Mrs. Martino once my Paypal payment clears for my current khukuris (er... and purses).

HI has probably a dozen models or more that are not on the website. The kamis are always making new things and changing old designs. The best way to find about them all is to keep checking the forums and looking at the deals of the day. Even though they might be sold out, a quick email to Yangdu will usually yield some success:)

I like it to be used for chopping and if need be prying and combat (never know when those damn zombies will attack).
Thanks in advance for your help.

P.S.
Also what type of handle would you recommend? Wood or horn?

Sounds like you want an Ang Khola. The WWII is good as well, but the AK is a really stout beast. As for the handle, they're both nice, it's just preference. What I did when I bought my first one was wait for a DOTD to come along that I liked, could afford and hadn't been sold yet. It's still one of my favorites.

I`settled on the Chiurwa AK and the WWII with wood handles. I'll take your advice and wait for the DoTD to see if I can pick up something with a horn handle.

Whoops, I missed your post saying you'd already bought those before I posted! Well, you made nice choices anyway. :) DOTD are still where it's at, you can get some really unique stuff from them.

Good choices. You will eventually want a 17-18" (B)GR. Just sayin'. :D

Welcome!

Tell me about it! I'm hunting now for the Uddha sword (which I contacted Mrs. Martino about). I should have stayed out of this forum when I had the chance :D

My first HI khukuris came in today!!! Sweet Moses, they are truly magnificent to behold. Upon opening up the package and hurriedly unwrapping the multiple layers of newspaper I could sense the power coming through me in waves. After unsheathing the khukuri (WWII) I had the overwhelming urge to raise it above my head and scream at the top of my lungs, "By the power of Grayskull, I have the power!" :D

After the tomfoolery, I sat and really marvelled at the stunning craftsmanship of each part of the khukuri. The solid stitching of the sheath, the lining and the khukuri itself just made me speechless. This folks is true old world skills at work.

Somebody on this forum stated that khukuris like the CS is really just a knife bent into the shape of a khukuri and that handling a true khukuri will show the difference was absolutely right on the money. The feel, heft and handling are something altogether indescribable and unique.

This is the first of many purchases to come and I can't wait to pickup a few more HI khukuris to add to me collection.

Also, The Wife enjoyed her Nepali purses which allowed me to dodge the "Where did you get the money for those knives?" line of questioning.

Please, resist the urge to chop your way thru walls and doors.:D
Oh and post some pics when you get a chance so we call all share your joy...

Safe and Happy Holidays

Funny, when I got my first (20" Chiruwa Ang Khola) I had the urge to hold it over my head and scream "I am [Cpl Punishment] of the clan MacGregor. There can be only one!"

Here are the nudies I promised of the khukuris:

Now I've got the itch for the British Army Service, Ultimate Fighter and the big 22" Ganga Ram :D
This does not include my want for the Tarwar and the Uddha sword. This is going to be an expensive year for knives in my household. I just hope Mrs. Martino has enough purses in stock...
