Hello, I am new to this site forum. Does anybody have diminisions off any of these fancy sanders used for making knifes? I would like to build one but need some diminisions. Thanks, Pat

Thanks Keith, I will look this over. I have a nice metal working shop, but need to set up to work steel. I have a lathe, cnc mill, horizontal mill, 2 tig welders, wire feed welder. cut off saw, band saw, glass beading cabinet. I am a toolmaker and have made a couple of knifes over the years. I am just starting to get my shop setup to make knifes. I will need alot of help. Thanks, Pat

Hey Pat,
I'm just down in Spring Arbor (a couple miles west of Jackson). It's a little bit of a hike from Bath, but not too bad.

I've got a Coote if you'd like to come measure it up in person. :)

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your responses. Mike, I will probable take you up on that offer of a visit. I am in the process of buying a racine power hacksaw next week. Those saws are great for cutting d-2 and tool steels. Thanks again for all your help. This is really a great forum. Pat

There are a few tool and die folks here using CNC. David Wesner was a mold maker and is a talented bladesmith up in your area using CNC.

Welcome to the forum.

Greatlakes,

Have you ever considered cutting out the major pieces of the above public grinder plans and offering assemble-yourself kits? Now there's an idea, if it can be done without excessive costs. Maybe just offer the major pieces of the frame and platen, etc. and let people collect the rollers, etc. themselves.

Actually, I have a new grinder system that will be out soon. I can't release details yet, but its gonna be the cat's a$$!!! I don't think it would be very cost effective right now just to cut the parts for these clone style machines. I started building a clone and didn't see the point when I could just buy it from Rob. Beaumont (Rob) makes a very nice machine for the money and thats the way I would go if I were looking at buying or building one like it.

Yeah, with the kmg clone I am building now I decided to cut it all from plate instead of buying it then cutting to width.
I bought a large piece of 1/2" plate as scrap then torch cut the strips for the arm holding assembly (bad idea) I ended up with plates that were not parallel, so i tried it again and that still didnt work. I am going to buy some actual 1/2"x 1.5" now... the 2.5" stuff worked out though. I also cut all of my 3/4" plates from 9x8" plates that I stripped the industrial paint off of on the dull hydraulic chop bandsaw we have. Then machined them using a dull hss milling machine bit. I found a sharp 5/8" bit after a few weeks of that. I wish I could cut them out on a waterjet!
