Purple heart (Setcreasea pallida 'Purpurea', syn. Tradescantia pallida 'Purpurea')
The plant: Purple heart is valued for its purple foliage and stems which lasts all season long. It produces light pink flowers that are rather insignificant in comparison to the foliage. Plants reach about 12 inches tall and wide. Drought tolerant.
How to use it: Use as a groundcover or foliage plant for the front of a mixed border. It can also be used in a xeriscape.
Cultivation: Purple heart grows best in well draining soil and in full sun to partial shade. The leaves will fade from purple to green in too much shade. Hardy in USDA Zones (7)8 to 10.
