Hey Guys..

Could someone ID this plant Please ??

Rick found this on one of our walks and have No idea what it is.. Never seen it before...

hey Eric,

I don't recognize it right off, but I have a chart of poisonous berries listed by colour that may help - have to find it first. :o

Is the stalk herbaceous or woody?

The leaves are opposite and look like they are sessile with a entire margin, yes?

I'm also thinking this was at the end of its growth cycle... It was about 24-30" tall

I had to tackle Eric to keep him from eating it.... you know how he gets.
 
I found and checked my poisonous berry list - no help. Doesn't mean it isn't, of course. It also could be an imported plant that has escaped from cultivation, then it could be anything.

This thread points out the very real need for a plant book, organized by berry colour! The list I have I did years ago, and it was only for poisonous plants. Might be a project I'll take on, not right now, though, too many other things on the go.

I wonder if there's a website that lists berries by colour.........

Eric, if you still find the plant, mark it with something, including your GPS so you can find it next year when it's in flower, assuming it's not an annual. Also if you can record as much info as possible, a local university could help.

Things like the aforementioned margin, and leaf stalk, whether leaves are coarse or not, hairy on top, bottom etc., hollow stem?, stem round or square, number of seeds in berries, size of berries, leaves, etc. well, you know what's needed.

nor I. Hydnophytum formicarum is native to Indo-Malaysia. A tropical plant. Wrong climate.


It's either

Orange-fruited Horse Gentian
(Triosteum aurantiacum)
or
Feverwort/Wild Coffee
(Triosteum perfoliatum)

Two basically similar species...
Potent medicinal plant... Th root can induce vomiting and works as a laxative...
Dried seeds can be ground as coffee substitute... Although 'Gentian' is in the common name, it is not a Gentian...

I emailed Old Man Marty. He is quite the plant guy as well as ole G.P. He even may be older than GP (Doc)

I am positive it is Orange-fruited Horse Gentian - Feverwort...

I'm a botanist, but don't specialize in Northern plants...

Although I remembered doing some research on north american plants used as coffee substitutes a while back... I went for honeysuckle family as it somewhat resembles California Honeysuckle (lonicera hispidula) in fruit clustering...

I'm curious to see more pics of it! And some processing!:D

Great minds think alike - I emailed a plant biologist on PaleoPlanet but he hasn't responded yet.

Way to go, Tim! :thumbup:

Must be pretty rare up here - the USDA range map doesn't even show it growing here.

Thanks Eric, for starting this thread. I mentioned above that what is sorely needed is a book of plants using berry colours.

In thinking about this, screw the book. My computer and I'm sure most of yours has a slide show feature for pictures. I already use this feature to help increase plant recognition. The idea your thread has hatched is to start a folder with subfolders such as red berries (includes orange), blue berries, black berries, etc., also white flowers, red flowers, etc.

If I already had that, ID'ing your plant would have been a piece of cake (except I've never seen it and it probably wouldn't have been in the folder in the first place :o) That will never happen again, of course (already entered).

So, say somebody posts a picture of a plant in flower, with say yellow flowers - you run the yellow flower slide show until you recognize it. Obviously this would work better with distinct looking plants than less distinct.

In any case, this is a wip (work in progress) and I think it will do the trick.

As I started working on my coloured berry slide show, something started eating at me. Didn't I used to have a book called 'Berry Picker' or something like that?

Well, to cut to the chase, I found it.

So I went to page 6 (Key to Herbs) - scrolled down to Red-orange or yellow-orange berries, in leaf axils p 10 , Feverwort - went to page 10, "Feverwort or Wild Coffee (Triosteum spp.) HHMMMMMMMMMM! :o

I'm still going ahead with my slide show though, because I think it will be a very handy resource.

Isn't there an online resource where you can plug in different characteristics of a plant and have it pop up with some possibilities? It seems like that would be pretty easy to do for someone who knows how to do those kind of things. Give the ability to enter information and pics to people who prove that they know what they are talking about.
