I know its a palm of some sort. Looks like the leaves would make strong cordage. Anyone know.

Looks like a young date palm to me. Phoenix dactylifera. Are there spikes on the fronds as you get closer to the trunk?

Hell ya and they will stab you like crazy. Very tough.

WIth leaves that are that fibrous it probably will do weel for cordage.. If the leaves are dry let 'em soak a bit.. But I've had luck making decent immediate use crodage with green leaves off of various plants...
