Dont get me wrong here my 5 year old daughter is taking modern medicine for her cold. The doctor said not to panic keep her home for anything below 103.5

I couldnt help but try it, 8:15 am 103.1 degrees, applied aluminum plates to burning little heiny and belly...:(
8:25 am 100.2 degrees...:) What a difference, and she didnt even have to get out of bed.

Very high temps can produce brain damage. One of the treatments is to apply cloths dunked in cool water to the head. Serious business !!

Good way to cool people down is cold clothes to armpits, groin and sides of the neck. DARPA has come up with a really neat thing that you hold in your hands and can drop or raise your body temps to normal levels within 30 seconds. Basic principle is they use either cold or warm water circulating inside a metal cone, the large amounts of capillaries help to cool or heat your blood depending on what is needed.

For a stubborn fever I remember parents took me to a cold shower. Plates for reducing body temperature is a weird approach but it is logical, I'm glad she is better...

Galadduin-you probably remember a cold shower but it was actually hot. A cold shower to a feverish body can cause shock. What I have had done to me and have done to my son as well is to place the feverish child in a tub of water a little warmer than you would normally use for showering. Let the water cool with the child in it, even adding some cold water to cool it faster. This will safely bring the temperature down. I have seen ice baths used in hospitals but a case of shock is not near as life threatening in a hospital as at home.

Thanks for correcting me David, it was about 30 years ago but I remember it was the coldest thing I've encountered, but I guess you're right even a warm water would feel that cold when I had that fever...

Stubborn fever is an understatement.poor kid has been burning up all day,The tub brings some relief and the medicine is keeping it under control. She gets a kick out of the plates and the whole family gets a science lesson today....lol

We wiped our feverish children with alcohol soaked washcloths.
Worked for us!
Now that you have your child quenched are you going to
Temper her??

Poor thing. Hope she feels better.:D

A bag of ice to the scrotum works. I had to do that to a kid one time, doctor's orders. Doctor said his fever was too high to try to transport him to the hospital. I really hated to do that.

WHAT!!!!!! I really don't get that one, to me not enough vascularization to help enough, and risk damage to his reproductive organs. Why not to the axilla, knees, feet, head .......

Cut yourself in that area and you will see how much circulation you have there. You have very good circulation in the scrotum. When a fever gets 106 or better and you have tried everything else, it's time to go to the scrotum. I never heard of it causing damage to the reproductive organs but I guess it is possivle. I didn't like doing it, the kid didn't like it either, but it probably saved his life.

I got a two year old almost three daughter. And when she gets sick like that I feel so helpless. I feel like taking her place. I hope your baby girl gets better.

Actually heat to the area can damage the reproductive organ. It is better cold, which reminds me that I probably shouldn't have my laptop right in my lap. Hope she is feeling better!:)

I used to be pretty smart.... then got meningitis when I was 20 and had a temp of 105.5 That explains a lot, now doesn't it ;)

Nick, everything would have been fine if you would have just iced your scrotum. I know mine probably needed iced a few times when I was in my 20s too.Jim

The next thing you know is he will be experimenting with using Noxema to try to work up an abdominal hamon on her.
