Platen Angle Adjustment

This must have been discussed ad nauseum but I have done plenty of searches and surprisingly couldn't find a thing.

I'm still very frustrated in not being able to get my KMG up and running but it has given me plenty of time to daydream about my first grinding attempt which brings me to this question. Is there an inherent problem in adjusting the platen angle by toeing it in to let's say 85 degrees to the work rest for bevel grinding? There is an adjustment nut set in the semi-circular channel on the platen frame and I guess it's there for a reason, right? (see picture)

Is there something I'm missing? It seems pretty straight forward and yet I see plenty of people adjusting the angle of the work rest instead.

The whole point of my question is that I think it would be much easier to maintain the blade (edge up grinding) perpendicular to the rest while working and letting the platen set the angle (kind of like a Sharpmaker).

The problem might be readily apparent if I were to try it but, like I said, the frustrations build. :dispirited:

Thanks!

I grind using an adjustable angle tool rest.
I choose to adjust the tool rest instead of the platen angle because I can just raise or lower it by hand instead of having to get a tool to change the platen angle.

Thanks FTO. I know it's easier to adjust the rest if you have an adjustable one but for someone without that feature is adjusting the platen okay? Does it accomplish the same thing? I would think so but I'm concerned there may be a belt slippage issue or something else I can't foresee.

I set mine angled back at a 45 degree and grind with no rest. Sometimes if profiling I will set it up with the rest perpendicular to the belt, and the platen running straight up and down.

Thanks Burton! Of course, profilling at 90 degrees. Glad setting up the platen at an angle works. That solves my jig design issues.:)

Too much thinking about grinding but no damn grinding yet. Driving me crazy.
