Cheap belts are just that , cheap.

What is a good choice for belts in the 220 and up range that dont go bump-bump , divot-divot , dammit-dammit

I usually dont have this problem as anything above 120 grit is just showing off :D

I use the Trizact "Gator" belts from Tru-Grit for anything finer than 60 grit on the platen. They're almost as thick as a 60 grit belt, so you don't feel the joint.

Mark
For the higher grits I like the Trizact belts or whatever they call them now. They are only for working steel and no good for handle materials, but for steel they work great.
Thanks,
Del

mark im happy to run 50, 80 120 then trizac A300 A180 A100 A65 and finish with A45
on cpm154 that and a cork belt then a felt belt makes for a dang fine finish

I still get bumping with these..,but they are better than others i've tried.

Yes, but the bump is minimal and causes me no trouble. I also like the aggressive cut and flex of the yellow klingSpor over the other belts.

Flat grinding, the trizacs just don't cut long enough for me.

I don't know if the belts come from Klingspor already spliced or not, but I noticed that even some of the same grit yellow Klingspors bump less than others. I can't remember if it was the ones I bought from Rade Hawkins or Pops but one of those batches seem to have a slightly different splice. As for me, I just order a KMG rotary platen, so problem solved and no risk of a ceramic platen flying off at a bad time:D As far as other fine grit flexible belts go, the blue/gray Hermes belts are suprisingly good, at least in 120 and 220. MUCH better than their cheapo red AO belts and the price is right.

i find that dressing the trizac belts now and then not only keep them flat but brings back the cut

and i too round the edges for that nice plunge cleanup

Hey Mark: 3M- Trizact belts are one of the best belts you will get. You can get them up to 600. That's what I use in my shop.

Don,
Really? I have had trizacts that I have used on 50 or more knives, and I flat grind everything. I am using a 400 grit equivilent that I have used on 20 knives and it is barely worn.
Thanks,
Del

Just for metal working after AO up to 400 grit :

Micron belts in 600 & 900 grit.
Trizact fullflex belts in 1200, 2500, 3000, and 4500.

The micron belts have a splice that's silky smooth and I've never noticed a bump on the trizacts. With those high grits I use a light touch and move the blade back and forth just like polishing. The trizacts cut quickly but burn the bejesus out of you if you push too hard.

For a test etch on a blade, I'll hit it quick with a 220 trizact belt. To me it seems it gives a better grind than a 400 AO belt.

hell..........even some jflex klingspore I have gotten go Bump Bump and I just save those to clean exposed uptangs

yeah - bump bump sucks sucks!!
