Platen distance ???

Is there a rule of thumb on how much pressure the belt should have against the platen??
I don't want to wear belts or platen prematurely.

I run the platen just proud of the idler wheels, maybe 1/16-3/32". You want the belt tight which is a function of the tensioner, not the platen. Platens wear more at grinding contact points than anywhere else.

Should I square the table/rest with the platen bare or with belt on it.
To me it would seem it should not matter.

Square is square, could do it either way. Like Bob, I have mine where the platen is about 3/32 in front of the idler wheels.
