For those who have grinders with battered platens, or if you have a cheaper Sears, Grizzly, etc. Patton Knives gave me this great tip. Take the platen to a local glass shop and have them attach a piece of 1/2" thick fireplace glass to the platen. Have them cut the glass to cover the platen and round the edges... Patton mentioned the glass company will know what adhesive to use. The fireplace glass is super strong and doesn't heat up like the steel and should last years without having to be resurfaced. The total for glass and adhesive runs about $7.00 here in Boise.

Yes, this is a good method and I have used it for years. However, I use just plain 1/4" glass and bond it on with superglue and kicker. I get a box of 30 or so pieces for a buck each and they last a long time. When they crack, I chip them off, scrape off the glue and bond on another.

Dan Johnson from Steven Bader taught me this. Nice Guy!!
