Platen question

Hey there, I've got a newbie question about platens. Should the surface of the platen be contacting the belt so that the belt rides on the platen? Or should there be a slight gap between the belt and the platen? Thanks for the help in advance guys.

The belt wants to be on the platen. Not real tight but it needs to be in contact unless I have been doing it wrong for years.
