I seen where someone was using Glass as a platen. SO what the hell IT is cheap enough. Thought I give it a shot. I loved it till is busted and slammed to the floor. Thinking boy that was a stupid idea. Glad it missed me.
Better idea?

What kind of glass? How thick was it?

I have the so-called ceramic glass on my Cootes and it works fine. I have heard that ordinary plate glass will work. I'm curious what you were using.

HD had 12x12 marble and granite tiles for about 5 bucks a while ago. I didn't get one cause I was on the motorcycle but I should have gone back. I'm using a piece of hardened 5160 at the moment... we'll see how long it lasts.

I don't even know if the marble or granite will work but I thought I read that somebody was using it.

Folks here have suggested a small lip or ledge at the bottom of
the platen for the ceramic or glass to rest on

I cut a 2" x8" piece of marble tile, raduiued the top and bottom edges and epoxied it to my craftsman 2 x 42. It's lasted for a couple monthes with no dicernable wear.

I use a graphite platen. The work is slightly cushioned and belts last longer.

I was using the ceramic platens that look like glass. They work well, but, if you do something like leave your rest loose and remove the tool arm and the rest hits the glass it breaks. I think I am going to go with hardened D2 on all mine from now on.
