Playing Around With the RC-5

I like that the Hest can store stuff inside the handles. Nice pictures!

The little HEST has to be the coolest small knife I have ever seen. That handle is surprisingly comfortable even for my large hands. I did not give it quite the workout I gave the RC-5, but I'm sure that I will at some point. The HEST is my new EDC knife. And yes, it is nice that the handle can store some things.

Yeah, nice blade. The pics have me hankering for one. This is destined to be one of those great survival blades that you just love to take on camping trips or hunting excursions. This would be my pick of the litter from the RAT line, heck, I'd not worry if one of my buddies borrowed it, the RC-5 looks to be virtually bullet proof. Good score at what I assume to be a decent price point.

wow i always wanted a sere operator, I almost bought one till I caught wiff of Rat Cutlery. Now that I see it compared to an Rc-5 It looks like a pretty boy. Great pics btw!

Great pics HD! Do you own a Becker BK-2? How does the RAT RC-5 compare to that one? I have the BK2 and its a beast of a knife for a 5"er. I am trying to decide between the RC-5 and RC-6 currently. Thanks. :)

H Dawg, what Method of EDC do you practice with the HEST? When I wear a jacket or something I rock an improvised MercHarness, but if I'm just fartin' around I keep it on my belt with the 550 loops strung through the kydex.

Great photos.....thanks for taking the time to post. Wonderful perspective of sizing on each of the models.....I think I might have a HEST in my future.....very soon.
Thanks for sharing,
JT

I wear it on my belt using the cord belt loops or attach it to my Max water bottle carrier. One area I hike in has a sign forbidding knives and just about everything else. My hiking vest covers it up. For in town, I carry a folder.

My favorite thus far is the RC 5. Not only because I love thicker blades, but it just feels great in-hand. I won't be carrying this as an EDC like the Izula, and soon possibly the HEST, but I do know that it feels great to hold.

That RC5 had a nice workout, gonna convex it soon HD?

Just the final edge. I am resisting the temptation to strip and full convex it. I am surprised that I like the knife as much as I do. Usually I prefer long, light, fast, and thin blades to short, heavy, slow, thick ones. But this knife works for me. It might a bit much for most to EDC, but it actually carries quite well in the sheath provided. The knife just feels bullet proof. It would not be easy to break one of these. But then, I never broke the 3/16" thick RAT-7 in years of use. I haven't used the RC-6 as much, but it is very much like the RAT-7. The RC-5 reminds me a lot of my old saber ground Ranger RD-7, only shorter. That's another thick heavy "sharpened prybar" type knife. Truth is, for most knife chores, the thinner flat ground blades work better than the thick ones. But for splitting hardwood and beating on things, thick and heavy works. I'd love to see what those AF SERE guys actually do with their RC-5s that made them think they needed a 1/4" thick saber ground blade. I can do anything I did with the RC-5 with the RC-6.

I don't own a BK-2, but I have sharpened some for others. It's a lot like the RC-5, but I prefer the RC-5 handle. Since you already have the BK-2, I'd go with the RC-6.
