hello everyone- im honered to be in this forum with such brilliance-that said,i need help tying to fiquere out what equipment to get. at this point i only do handles on existing knives.i really want to get into learning forging and stock removal methods. i have contacted a few local gentlemen and will be blessed by there guidance at a later time. i currently have a small delta 1x42 with an 8" rounder, a 10" drill press and many hand tools --vise etc. i know my equipment is on the very low end but thats my budget. im running into about 500 dollars soon and im thinking what to invest in next. i was thinking maybe i can find a metal cutting bandsaw and a grinder ( cheaper ones). then i thought maybe a tablesaw or a forge. but i think for future stock removal and overall wood cutting a bandsaw would be more appropriate. the bandsaw is at lowes and it runs around $375--its a delta. and maybe a $100 grinder for use as a cut off blade and general grinding. i will be starting with stock removal. any suggestions? i konow i got a low budget. thank you so much

i just got a jet vertical and horizontal band saw from menards for 249$ its a very nice setup it might save you a little money if they carry it close to you.

A good way to spend 500 bucks get this grinder the 2X42"http://www.sears.com/shc/s/s_10153_12605_Tools_Bench+Power+Tools_Sanders" Thenorder a 100 bucks worth of good belts fro it from tru-grit,then get the 159 dollar metal cutting band saw from harbor frieght.and a good blade for it. If you have any money left after that spend on supplies. Or buy you 2-3 good files and go to it.

mr/mrs Buzek i was told that i neede a sander without a back support so the belt can flex. i was gonna get the one you mentioned but i didnt think the belt was free standing--thank you

The back support aka Platen is removeable if you want to do slack belt work,I probably made a 100 or so knives with that little grinder before I got my KMG. It runs a little fast but will do a fair job.also get a ceramic platen liner for it,that will improve your grinds.

thanks for all imput. luckily i ran into a bit a funny in the last 48 hours and i think im gonna get the kmg grinder. then ill save up and get a good/better bandsaw. thanks

My power tool requirements are

Belt Grinder, I have a 1x30 and 2x72.
metal cutting bandsaw, it was on sale and I gave away my old wood bandsaw as this does almost everything i need.
12" drill press. great inexpensive 5 speed drill. wish it was longer.
Milling machine, still in box but itching to boot it up.
A vivid imagination. Sometimes the things in here stay here.

The best tool so far was the 2x72 kmg I bought two years ago.
