Please allow me to gloat.

Congrats. I'm assuming this is yawara-type fighting with a suitable flashlight, as opposed to "home run derby" with a 7D B-Lite?

Yes, although it has an appendix on larger lights.

How did you research this subject for your book?

Beating up hobos. A little animal testing. Some experiments on convicted criminals. You know, the usual.

I think it's best if one leaves behind complex philosophical considerations (the ones that are clouding this discussion), and focus on what is functionally important.

Hypothetical situation: You let your guard down for whatever reason, and there is now 1 mugger, armed with knife, 3-5 feet distance, and he asks for your money.

Some people feel as though by handing over the wallet, they are averting a potentially worse situation and more dangerous situation. If that's the case for you, I suggest you check the statistics as best as you can, and make sure your decision is reality-based, not for the sake of an Internet discussion, but for your own safety.

Others may feel as though by handing over their wallet upon threat of force, that they are in some way giving up their life, or part of it, by going counter to something that they feel is important, some part of their identity. For them, their life (as they know it) is potentially lost by handing over the wallet, rather than potentially engaging in conflict over it.

Most people will fall somewhere in between, I suspect, as I do. My priorities change depending upon the situation. What I am willing to do while I am alone, or (even better) backed up, is a lot different than my actions upon contact when I'm with my non-tactical girlfriend. It depends upon whether he has friends handy, the terrain, etc. The important thing, in this case, is to have your decision tree ready before the SHTF. The same wonderfully oversized brains that allow us as humans to have these conversations about abstract ethical concepts over the internet, have a tendancy to slow us down in situations where it is important to act with minimum thought, and maximum commitment. This means training, not just physically, but mentally, with role-playing, visualization, etc.

My point? If you've read this far in the thread, it would be a good time to take 30 seconds, and make sure you know how you will WANT to act in this situation. Go. Right now. Not later. I promise the thread will still be here.

Good. Now that you know what you WANT, go and train accordingly.

Joe S.

Whats that got to do with flashlights?

i think he thought he was in another thread lol, it doesnt have much to do with this thread......................

Yeah, that was supposed to end up in Chambers' "interesting..." thread. My comp-fu is all kinds of wrong these days.

O mighty Moderators, come rescue me from the cackling Internet gremlins, and deliver my post to the correct thread, or at least delete is here, and I'll repost it there.

...The blade arts are for defense. They are not for competitions, attacks, and robberies. They are not for operating the best knife dojo or for proving Japanese knife is better than Filipino knife. God, what sad crap. The forums and the Internet are chock full of nasty haters who add little to anyone’s knowledge base. They just spread hate and bullshit...

Haters they be.

Phil,
Congratulations, I will have to pick up a copy some day. I have read your articles on the use of small flashlights for self defense and believe they are a great defensive tool where others would not be allowed by law. I even have one wrapped in cord as you had described, it feels absolutely secure in the palm. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Dan

Well Done Phil. Looking forward to having a look @ that- (preferably under the covers @ night w/ a 6P w/ a 120 Lumen upgrade...)
Cheers,
Mike

Congrats Phil.

You could have called me to participate in one of the hobo beatings... I love a good vagabond beatdown.

:D

Cool, as a lifetime subscriber (yes they exist), I'll start paying more attention to the ads. Do you recommend the book?

He researched it only in his wannabe "street warrior" mind. Do you actually think he has beaten anyboy with a small flashlight ha ha?

What's the matter, kiddo? Mommy didn't hug you enough as a child?

Kiddo hm? Hardly so. Ya, mommy didn't hug me as a child because I never felt the need to be hugged in the first place. Not everyone needs as warm relations as you or some others apparently (not that I suggest anything) ...
