Hey,
I am in search of a maker that could make me an elvish blade that arwen carries in lotr does anyone have any good ideas? i would prefer to have it forged but i'm not to picky. also because I am a poor college student a less expensive maker would be great, but not essential. Please advise thank you
Trevor

Got subtitles for those of us who don't speak whatever language that is?

You want an "elvish blade"???

Sounds like some sort of Franklin Mint thing with a picture of Elvis screen-printed (and lovingly hand layered in genuine 14K gold) on the handle. "Act now and you can get both the young Elvis and the old Elivs with the handsome display stand for only 29 payments of $49 each."

"that arwen carries"

Arwen? Ok. Sounds like some sort of political action committee. The Association of Retired Windmill Employees National, or some such thing.

" in lotr"

Ok. Lotr must be some city somewhere.

Now, plese bear in mind that I have no TV and my live is a common cultural semantic derth. I like it that way.

I'm going to guess that this has something to do with some TV show and/or Movie and/or breakfast cereal since they seem to be related these days.

If so, it's entirely possible that the knife in question is copyright. Even if a formal copyright hasn't been claimed on the knife, it would still be unethical for a maker who has no right to the design to make a knock-off of it.

That sort of thing is usually left to Franklin Mint, United Cutlery, and Master Cutlery.

LOTR=Lord of the Rings (I think)
So I'm guessing that Arwen is a character in LOTR (can't remember which dude, though).

@Gollnick.
Why don't you just answer people's posts? MUST you always have some smart alec reply that rambles on for 5 paragraphs? Does it just give you a buzz to be sarcastic? Are you desperately going for that elusive 6000th post?Do you honestly think you are funny?

Why not just stay out if you are going to be sarcastic every time someone asks a question? You have done it to me and I see it is pretty much a habit with you. Do you honestly think you are being smart?

These and other questions will be answered in the next episode of "When the Stomach Turns"

QUOTE originally by Gollnick: "...If so, it's entirely possible that the knife in question is copyright. Even if a formal copyright hasn't been claimed on the knife, it would still be unethical for a maker who has no right to the design to make a knock-off of it."

Just answer Mhael's question. You are really being most obtuse here don't you think? These sorts of posts by you will most certainly go a long way in nominating you for the "Miss Congeniality Award"

Oh, and Gollnick, start your own threads if you MUST reach 6000 by next Thursday.

Happy musical directing...

Gee, following your own train of thought, who are you to tell Gollnick to screw off? I would think that you are usurping Mhael's privledge there.

If you're interested in Arwen's sword, just be patient and wait until United Cutlery releases it's reproduction.

(golly i have no idea what they are talking about so ill just make not-so-intelligent guesses for a whole page of typing)

Gollnick is just bitter because of his ignorance.

ps. it was a good read still.

wow 5 replies and how much usefull info do i get none, that was fun. lotr is Lord of the rings. Arwen is the elvish princess who is the daughter of Elrond. She is the one which calls up the river on teh black riders. The sword is a fairly long, hand a half length handle with a good size blade that curves outward like a katana just a little more drastic. And the whole point is that I want a good blade not a UC thank you very much. So if you can help me great, if not then plz don't waste your time on me.
thanks

Try Kirby Wise, he makes a pretty good sword at pretty reasonable rates.

Well, MelancholyMutt, why exactly do you think I have intervened, hmmmmmmm...do you think it's just because I felt like it? Now if you read my post properly you will have noticed that Gollnick has done pretty much the same thing to me not too long ago, so when I saw his response to this thread, I had to say something.

And precisely why do you have to ask?

This is the thread I am referring to:

Now can we all play nicely?

Is there not some sort of Lord of the Rings website you could go to and play on?

Mr. Adelfson why don't you mind your own business instead of trying to ruin mine? I asked a valid question and was looking for an answer. have u not heard the saying if u have nothing good to say then don't say it? well I think this applies. thank you

Mhael-- you might want to post this in the sword forum here-- might get some better replies. You might also want to take a look at Mineral Mountain Hatchet works-- Ted Frizzell does very affordable work and his blades are difinitely users. I don't know if he would be up for a custom project like that, but it might be worth a try. He normally does a parkerized finish, but he might be able to leave the blade unfinished for you and you could do the polishing work by hand if you wanted to save some $. Good luck; I hope you find what you are looking for.

United will probably have something coming out if she play's a larger role in the next 2 movies - if not, don't count on it.

Right now there are 5 of the LOTR swords out. From what I've heard (rumor mill) that's it until the next movie. More information will probably be available in Nov - Dec.

Mhael, if and when United Cutlery brings out it's version of Arwen's sword, it will be a "wall-hanger" not a usable weapon, if you follow me. The do not make swords that are safe to use in any kind of live steel situation or in any other cutting situation. As to where you might find someone who might make you a copy or near copy, Gollnick is correct, the design is copyrighted, try www.swordforum.com and look into the following forums: "Sword Forum International > Recreation & Special Interest > Fantasy Sword Forum" and "Sword Forum International > Recreation & Special Interest > Sword Movies & Movie Swords". They have been discussing the swords of "Fellowship of the Ring" since the first trailers came out for the movie last Fall, and I am certain that you can find all that you will need to know there. Heck, the smith who made the swords for the movie has shown up to post on them on occasion. He has said that even he cannot make copies as the movie company sold the rights to United Cutlery and UC is absolute about enforcing the copyrights.

I hope that this is helpful.

Read your own quote, fool.

The LOTR swords at Museum Replicas are from United Cutlery and can usually be obtained at better prices elsewhere if you look hard enough. And, as before, please regard UC swords as wall hagers or decorator swords, not as users. For instance, if you read what they say in the MRL catalogue about them, you will note that they say that they have a "Rat Tail" tang. This is usually a threaded piece of steel welded to a stub of the blade that sticks up into the hilt. They are notoriously weak, tending to break off at the weld.

May I also note to those of you who are p*ss*ng all over Mhael for having the gall to ask about this that we have frequently told newbies that there are no stupid questions, only unasked ones. How would you have liked it if, when you were a newby, you asked a question and were p*ssed upon in the same manner as Mhael has been? I remember making stupid comments when I first joined, some would say that I still do, and I also remember asking what I now see as really dumb questions. But the membership was generally quite patient and I have come to truly enjoy my participation in this BFC. Being considerate and helpful to new people is how we recruit members and, if they come to really enjoy themselves here, maybe they will join as paying members just as many of us have done.

For the record, I find Gollnick's comments to be very witty and usually quite funny. I almost spit my coffee out when I read his comments on this thread. Stop taking life so serious.

There are some really childish posts in this thread. Chuck's I found to at least be funny. The rest were nothing but mean spirited and uncalled for.

You asked this question in the Cutom forum and I gave you a couple of suggestions of makers to talk to. One is a member here who goes by the user name Dementia. The other is Jonathon Loose. These guys do some fantastic work. They would not be interested in doing a direct copy, but might be able to come up with a workable compromise. Jonathon's work can be seen at www.jloose.com .
