I like the looks of the Microtech mini SOCOM clip point folder. Decent materials and all, and I guess it is a high quality piece.
So, fellow forumites, what do you think?

If you like tiny knives with handles too small for adult hands, go for it. I have one in the auto version, and it's my least favorite MT.

I have the manual version with a Black Ti coating and it is one of my top daily carry knives.

It is currently sharing top billing with my Benchmade 705 because I love the Axis Lock.

I owned a black clip point MSOCOM for a total of 24 hours. High quality it had. For me it just wasn't particularly good for any real cutting task. Small handle, thick edge, and it was more difficult to open than I thought it should be. I ended up using two hands to open it. None of the MT's ride low enough in the pocket for my taste. I think you could do a lot better in that size/price range. IMHO the MSOCOM would be right at home in the $60-$70 neighborhood.

Still not convinced

Won't EVEN try. You can do a lot better for a lot less money. Look at R.E.K.A.T. or G.T.

If you need convincing, you don't really want one. Think of all of the knives out there that really turn your crank and buy/save up for it instead.

I've read here on the Forums that MT's often will not pass the Spine Whack test. That's all I needed to hear. No MT's for me thank you very much!
Too many fine knives out there to risk my pinkies on a knife that won't pass a Spine Whack.

If you've got that kind of money to spend I'd suggest either buying the full-sized SOCOM or something else.
I've got a SOCOM and I'm very happy with it, razor sharp (slices up cigarette paper no problem-my sharpness test), locks up solid, never had it fail, and really feels good in my hand. Even people who don't know much about knives always comment on how the SOCOM feels in their hand-like it's supposed to be there.
But, that's the full size, I wouldn't buy the mini myself, too small and too much for what you're getting.

I've had a hand ground clip...and an auto tanto...their not worth the money (to me)...even at retail. Go for a 705 or a 720 if you're looking for small. Maybe even a 905.

The Mini-Soccom is a very nice knife. If you like a very well made, high quality knife, then I say go for it. But if you need a knife that works, that you can depend on when you need it, I think you better look elsewhere. I personally would go with the mini axis.

DEFINITELY I'd advise holding one before you buy. High quality construction, but very small handle and (to me) inexcusably hard to open.

I will advise you to go a different route and save up the money for a small Sebenza if you don'’ already have one. I received an old profile model back from CRK today that was being stonewashed and engraved. It is going to be a gift to my brother, and once more I was struck by the simple elegance of the design and superb fit of the knife when I opened the box, and I carry one size and design or the other every day. I got it home and slipped it into the custom sheath that Gary Graley made for it, and you will all agree that my brother is a lucky man. It will be hard to hold onto the knife for the two months until his Birthday.

I may be preaching to the converted, but if you are looking for a knife of that size and don’t have the small Sebenza, then stop buying other knives until you can afford one.

I've had two, really liked them both, good design, blade material, and construction. Lock-up seemed fine, handle was the right size for the blade.
I'll admit I traded both away because I decided to go all Sebenza. But, I regret I could not afford to keep them.

Hi there!

Can´t really convince you to buy a MT mini socom, BUT do your self a favor and buy a MT socom full size with tanto point, i got a DA and i love it!!
Yes, now i´m rambling!
But in pure swedish. Köp en, du kommer inte att ångra dig, MT gör fett schyssta knivar, jag har två...

Be well all of you!

I have been considering purchasing the BM 705, but I heard it had some odd-looking thick pivot washers. It is probably nothing to worry about, perhaps it feels a little "spongy" as my old BM Panther which also has plastic washers.
However, I do appreciate a tight solid knife and good quality.

I have owned a mini socom. The quality is there, very nice. Great blade to handle ratio. In that respect its better than the 705 which itself is not bad. Its harder to open than the 705 and the handle is not as comfortable. I grant you that the washers on the 705 are slighly thick but the handle is rigid and blade seems well held with good torque resistance. The 705 is not spongy like the panther. I think the sponginess on the panther was due to the zytel handle.

I own both the full size tanto and clip point socoms...they are wonderful pieces! I was able to find them at terrific prices. I own a dozen Spydies, half a dozen BM's, and upon receiving my two socoms, i called my collector buddie and told him...
"I have been to the Mountain Top, and have seen the Light!"
These knives are the basis on which I measure all but a few of other tactical folders.

the only issues i have are these:

1. Look too damn good to use as an everyday utility knife! Seem better suited for a velvet lined glass case!

2. Too damn big! Even though very comfortable to carry all day, they are just too big for what i consider an everyday carry knife. I carry an M2 stryker everyday, which is a big knife, but is smaller than both of my socoms!

Buy the Mini-Socom, you will not be disappointed. From the moment you open the collector-box the piece comes in, to the daily wipe-downs with Tuff-Cloth, you'll love the knife...(Buy a normal color though...black, gray, silver...)

As I stated my Mini-Socom Clip Point is one of my favorite carry knives. The other two in the top three are the Benchmade 705 and Mini-Stryker.

I have to admit that in the fit and finish department the Mini-Socom has a little something extra over the Benchmades.

Several people have commented on the Mini-Socom being hard to open. I bought a bottle of White Lightning Lubricant at the same time I bought the Mini-Socom and I have not had any problems after a few cycles of opening and closing using this product. In fact I am able to flick the Mini-Socom open with my wrist without using the thumbstud. I try not to do this too often since it is hard on the knife but it is nice to be able to.

A couple of people have commented on MTs failing the Spine test. Again I have had absolutely no problems with mine.

Cousin Cinnamon,

If you like small folders I believe that you will love this knife.
