Please Cure my Ignorance :)

Are you saying that when someone gives an answer that no one else should question it? Or do we just have to start a new thread to do so?

Nope, I'm saying that when someone asks "A, B, or C?", answering "D, maybe E, or better yet XYZ" doesn't help much. Nor does a polemic on specific HT protocols. Believe it or not, not everyone spends their lives comparing data sheets and edge-retention notes like I, and some of you do.

More generally, "newbies" often ask relatively straightforward questions and their threads get filled to the gills with opinions from out of left field that have very little to do with them.

Since you had already left an answer, it seems your recent post is just as extraneous as the ones you're complaining about.

Fair enough. The irony is not lost on me.

While I understand your point, I don't think there's any harm in more information.

I also didn't see any significant derailing of the thread. It's not like the thread turned into a debate of S30V vs 5160 when he asked about totally different steels.

Rob - all of your replies lead me to believe that you don't have an answer. Why would there be a "tirade" if you posted facts about heat treating the steel?

You're in the business of heat treating, so I guess I can understand why it would be helpful for folks to believe that certain people have a talent for it.
