I have a question I would love for someone to help me with. Why is it that nearly every time I post something in BF, or here, it gets responded to in a snarky way? I don't try to steel anyones thunder, but add the tips i've learned. I don't consider myself an expert, but I have hand made over 60 blades from scratch. I am no newbie to making, handling, grinding, and finishing knives. I know some must recognize me from the "other" forum where you can look up as many of my threads as you want, showing all aspects of knife making and bushcraft. Yet, I come over here, and am met with attitude most often. Is it because I don't always use an RC knife? I don't make knives for anyone but friends and family, so I'm not trying to illicit buisness. I would like to know why it seems to be a prevailing attitude?

can you post a link, or an example? we all use knives here, not just rats. i carry a benchmade daily, mrs.S carries a bark river, i think it was...

we have a strange sense of humor here, but tend to be respectful to those who show a bit of respect. if we're joking, it means we like you.(usually)

Yea, I don't know whAt you're really talking about man. Got any links? May help us see if it's just a collision of bad humor or something else. I looked back a day or so on your posts, and I'm not sure what you mean

Gotta be honest Cody, I don't see it.

I just went through most of your posts here in the ESEE forum and didn't really see anything that I found overly rude or inappropriate.

We're a pretty accepting bunch here but we do tend to be honest and we do bust bawls a bit.

Could you be mistaking common ribbing with rude behavior?

Not trying to be overly sensitive. Jeff and Mike have never been anything but great. I have nothing but respect for this company. Maybe I need some more coffee, sleep or just some time in the woods. It's no problem. I think my little war with Sharpshot has gotten me in bad standing in some circles over there, and I may be displacing a little bit. Apologies!!

It happens man. I just wanted to make sure I hadn't posted somehing that got misunderstood here. I think overall, this is one of the more relaxed corners of the web I've found,

No problems man, your always more than welcome over here.

I was just going to respond with, "Screw you, Cody."

I'm just kidding, dude. I don't know you from Adam. I got no problems with you.

I have noticed one thing that particular to the knife industry/culture. It seems that people in the knife industry are SUPER great people (like Jeff, Mike, Shon, Ethan Becker, the guy from Blind Horse (JT or TL or whatever-sorry can't remember),most of you guys on this forum, and some others) but the rest are complete know it all jerks with attitudes that always seem to want to put down people's tactics, gear, knives, etc. A lot of insecurity. There seems to be very few in the middle. Maybe I'm perceiving it wrong. Maybe this is part of what you were referring to?

Anyway, stick around. The more, the merrier.

Na, I see what your saying.

I was always told "There's more than one way to skin a mother in law" or something to that effect.

There's alot of "My way is the only way" type of mentality in any of the male dominated professions and hobbies. But you'll notice that the most sucessful of their ranks are the ones who don't share that mentality and are willing to examine and explore different techniques, tactics and gear.

I for one am always learning and theres very little that I think I have mastered.

Screw all of you! :D

My way is the ONLY way!

Seriously there are a lot of attitudes but I think its really a strength kind of thing. When you have people that are willing to go into the woods and make a watercraft using a knife, well that takes a bit of attitude. (BTW Im surprised there were not a lot of entries on that one! There was no way for me to go to the class or even get out and participate in that one. I really wanted to get in on the shelter building but that got displaced by work. Funny thing is I was laid off about the same time as the contest ended!)
We do tend to be a bit harsh at times but its mostly in fun.
I personally have been a little rough on Mr and Mrs S but its just ribbing.
(besides I think SHE likes it!)

LOL any particular mother-in-law you had in mind? :D

I think there tends to be less patience involved towards people who don't seem to want to make the effort to read the stickies or read through existing posts before asking questions, which have already been answered. Those people may feel they are being responded to "rudely" (Cody I'm not talking about your posts here).

I'm new to the site and everyone has been very helpful and polite so far. I'm sure that I've asked some newbie questions, but I think a lot of that happening is because the search feature is not available unless you're a paying member. I really appreciate the insight everyone has provided. Thanks again everyone.

Welcome to the forum!

Shotty - if you have some theories on the best way to try that skinning job I may be able to find you more test subjects... :D

Cody - not sure which posts you get the feeling from, but is it a general feeling or just a handful of the more abrasive members of BF who are consistently unpleasant? (or those who also know you from the "other" site, whatever that is)

Necro - part of the lack of participation on the "boat thread" was that while spring was in full force down south, a lot of us were still having a lot of snow & ice. Shotty also extended the contest, so you still have time to build an entry. (and now that I have an ESEE blade larger than my RC3, I can get off my butt and start harvesting saplings)

Well, you have to consider that most survival-related forums are going to be occupied with predominately type-A personalities. Type-As, even the best of friends will cross swords from time to time.

The humor, especially in this forum, can get pretty brutal at times. But I think Jeff let's things go a bit because if someone gets sand int heir mangina on the web, they probably won't do well in real survival training or real survival.

I do understand your meaning on the other forum. There's a few guys that have entrenched themselves and anything even resembling disagreeing with them gets you dogpiled. You don't see much of that here unless you go to Whine & Cheese.

Sword fighting is gay.

Come over, we need to have a talk. . .
