Hi I am new to the forum, I was told today I have two days to order a belt grinder for my high school metalshop. In Canada I am very limited to what I can order as it has to be CSA, so a Bee Grinder is what I am going to buy, I just need to know whether to buy the 8" or 10" contact wheel or both as I get to buy two grinders, or is it better to have 10" or 8" etc. Sorry for not searching I am under the gun and need advice asap.

I would get one 8 inch and one flat platen so you can both flat and hollow grind. That way you can set up one grinder for each type. I recommend ordering from knifemaker.ca. they have bee and kmg. They are great to deal with. Im far from an expert but i hope that helps.

What is your school going to be using it for?

We are going to be using it for general sanding but for knifemaking as well. The bee comes with a platen so I will get one with both no matter what, the quesiton is is better to have a 10 and 8 for options or is the difference between a 10 and 8 pointless and better of going with one or another.

If you're getting 2 grinders and both have a flat platen, I'd get one of each 10" and 8".

Serrated or Smooth....I have one of each and the Serrated seems to run cooler when I'm Hogging off material and I have modified the smooth to have a more rounded edge for softer radius of the plunge lines and hollow grinds.

I only have smooth so I can't give you a comparison, however when I was ready to purchase the only one I have I remember the consensus was If I only have one smooth would be better. The serrated will cut more aggressively. I've found no need to cut more aggressively as of yet. I have a 3hp hooked to a VFD. If I was doing a LOT more work maybe.

Smooth wheels can be used for all kinds of grinding, including finishing and Serrated are for hogging off/ Rough grinding. ——————————————-The belts you buy make as big of a difference . I’ve only own Smooth and have been able to Hogg off and finish just fine..

I really like travis and his work. But I chose a Northridge tool grinder... exceptionally happy about my purchase.
