Please help ID my knife - Is it a sterile Busse?

Oh, and go ahead and start a new thread introducing yourself, telling us how you got this knife, and how you came to think it might be a Busse.

And don't be too bashful about those usage marks. That is a serious tool to be used hard and loved. More than one of us has been lured to a knife like Gollum to the ring of power, then quietly placed it into a safe never to cut a thing. I know I have. Use this baby hard, and then find a different model you like and put THAT one in a safe.

I must say, though: I bet more than one hog came into this thread and then left with tears in his eyes. Hell, I bet Jeremy's STILL crying.;):D

Since I am new to Busse any thoughts on if I should polish off the rest of the black coating and give the steel a satin finish? What is a good way to freshen up the micarta handles?

Lol! Dude, you should be able to tell from the responses you've gotten here that you are in possession of not only a very valuable knife, but a piece of cutlery history. This knife is of particular interest to the Hogs in this forum, who would hate to see you mess with a rare example of an old Busse knife.

It's your knife, so do whatever you want with it, but your question, to us, sounds a little like, "Hey, I've got this rare old gold coin from the 1800s, should I rub off the front design, or any ideas on how to clean up the backside?" Or, "Hey, I just found a rare copy of the star spangled banner (the sheet music), should I paint it blue to make it look more uniform, and any ideas on how to wash the pages?"

While I am in full support of people using their knives however they want, flaunting your defacing of this rarity will feel like fingernails on a chalkboard to many here. If you are intent on stripping the coating and messing with the handles, I suggest you sell or trade the knife to someone here who will proudly preserve it as a piece of Busse history, and leave it intact. Then buy yourself another knife that's worth, oh $200 or so, strip and use that one (it could even be INFI!). A good option could be to trade this knife for an INFI user and pocket the cash. Not trying to part you from your knife, just suggesting you don't deface a very valuable knife just because you want a nice user.

If you plan on keeping it, and not use it, then I recommend you lightly clean it as gently as possible and put it in your drawer exactly the way it is. There's no amount of stripping or handle "refreshing" than will make the knife any nicer to those who know what it is, and you will be reducing the knife's value if you do any of those things.

Of course the final option is to just use it and enjoy it. In that case, I still would not strip it or mess with the handles any more. Who knows, you might want that $1000 in ten years, and you would be correctly preserving a piece of Busse history.

and serious... if you want it prettyed up I will do it! and if you want to get rid of it I get first shot! but dont do it!!!!!!

Great find! I would suggest leaving the coating on. If it is A2, the coating will aid in keeping the rust away. If it is INFI, well, I'd still keep the coating on it. Those scratches are just love marks. Have fun using it and don't worry if you add a new mark along the way.
Some folks have used a bluing pen to test the edge in order to see if the steel is INFI or A2. INFI will not absorbe the bluing, but A2 will. The only other way is to send it in to the Busse Shop and request that the Boss himself check it out.
As far as cleaning up the handles, a nylon bristle brush and some dish detergent should do the trick. The Micarta is very tough and can be bead blasted, but again, I'd just leave it as close to original as possible. Scrub it up and USE IT!

Enjoy your classic find & Welcome to the Busse forum!

Give the Busse shop a call to discuss a spa visit for your knife. They could strip and recoat it, and buff up the micarta. Unless you plan to make it a keeper/user, I would not suggest that you send it anyplace else. If you are going to use it and keep it, then there are several members here who could put a satin finish on if for you.

Most importantly, just enjoy it as you wish. It is just a knife/tool.

Fair enough on the coating and it will stay as is. I respect keeping it original... my parents are antique dealers and I have many pieces with history in my home. While I do love knives (I EDC either a Spyderco/SOG/CS), I must sadly admit I am not sure when I came across this one... since it was unmarked I never gave its brand any mind. The folks come across stuff at estate sales all of the time - most of my camp gear in fact.

I was planning to buy some Cold Steel tomahawks and Google research landed me on the Blade Forums TH forum about a week ago. Then I realized that you guys might help me ID this knife. I won't torture the blade (ok maybe some waterboarding) but it will be attached to my BOB with real respect now.

I will be ordering a Fallkniven blade blank in laminated VG-10 so I guess I will use it as my first DIY custom. I have a SOG Demo, SOG SEAL 2000, Gerber LMF, Becker BK7, and a Cold Steel UWK in the earlier Carbon-V.

I would definitely hold on to that one. If you really need a good couple of users, and don't care about the collector value of that one, you could sure offer it up on the exchange (if you up grade your membership and get other infi to use.

As to getting some Cold Steel hawks, they are a really great bang for the buck. I love throwing my rifleman hawk. I have been throwing that particular hawk for 8 years now (I think), and still enjoy using it.

I have this knife and it seems very well made with nice handles and sheath but not sure the make. I posted this in the Bernard Levine's forum and they suggested it might be a sterile Busse and to ask you guys. Can you help me ID the make and blade metal type?

Get a cold bluing pen from your friendly local gun store and try it on the edge of the blade. If it takes, your knife is A2. If it doesn't, INFI is the ticket.

All this talk of leaving the coating on. Nekid is where it's at! :D

These guys are all full of BS. It is a Straight Handle Badger Attack and could be INFI or A2, can't really tell from the pictures. Because it is used and you have messed with the handles, it is probably worth between $400 - $700, just depends on the buyer.

.

How do I get to be a $400 buyer????

If it is A-2 and you strip the coating, then you have a knife that will very readily rust, just takes a little more effort to take care of it as a user.

If INFI, it is less likely to rust and will look better to most folks stripped, be kind, use paint stripper, then clean it up with a polisher.

Edited to add:

As a user, the value will stay about the same Stripped or not.

As a collector soon to be a safe Queen, rubbed only lightly with a cloth suitable to cover a Baby's back side, leave the coating alone, some folks just love that "used look".

Slap the slabs back on that baby and beat the snot out of it. Wear that finish off! I m with Chuck, it is probably A2, but sending it to Jerry for an inspection might be the only way to get a definitive answer. A2 or INFI, it is a beauty and a beater.

Was waiting for Mulder to post that picture!

Still waiting for a PM from Ducci offering me a SHBA at $400. ROTFL!

Don't hold your breath, the top one has the "BUSSE" logo on the spine (and part of my MS, SHBA & BBSHSH logoed set) and the bottom one is my user variant.
