Please Help Me Find A Knife (with specific criteria)

That's what I've been reading for some time, I may have to try one (I've been looking for something to buy; just can't find anything I like enough to actually open my wallet?)

As for coating - it may, or may not, be acceptable to the OP... he's ruled out other knives for coated blades; and has stated that he appreciates a patina.
My comment was for his information...not intended to chastise you for mentioning the Freeman.

Maybe this?

4v, marbled Carbon Fiber, and a blade length of 3.4” (I know it’s .1” short) for well under your specified price.

Yeah it's a great knife, it's really grown on me. Don't worry, I did not take your comment as chastisement.

OP
If you like your PM3 and are looking for a 3.5 inch blade in non stainless, at least look at the Knifeworks exclusive PM2. M4 and carbon fiber. I bet you ll like the PM2 more than the PM3.

Fradon lock exclusive. Can’t link it cause I don’t think they’re paid sponsors.
I started looking close at the Manix 2 based on the many responses I received here. I saw that one this morning on a large auction site. The seller had many available so I was a little skeptical at first. Thanks for the information on Fradon Lock, now it makes sense how they would have an inventory of a knife I had never seen before.

If D2 is an option, maybe go to benchmade's custom knife designer page. They have half a dozen or so knives that you can customize and D2 is an option of steel choice on all the models and some models M4 is an option as well. Can get pricey depending on what you customize but all said and done you should be able to get a really cool blade for under $300.

Have you considered a custom? With that budget it should be possible.

if you’re still interested in the contego there’s a thread in the dedicated benchmade section from around when it first came out in which a member removed the coating. as i recall it didn’t sound all that difficult of a process.

I want to say thank you to everyone who has replied to my plea for help. I have received a lot of good information and even been introduced to a few makers that I did not know about which will ultimately lead to more knives for my collection.

I really like the Contego based on the size, the lock and the look and I only have two other Benchmade knives so I think at this point I am leaning towards either waiting for an uncoated one to come up or getting a new one and removing or having the coating removed.

This is a great forum with a lot of helpful members.
