went to peru last summer, took a spyderco delica and endura. no problems with either. might be a little more than you're willing to pay though.

I agree. Ethier of these would make a great choice.

Just to follow up...I took a Gerber Rivermaster fixed blade, a Dozier folding hunter, and a Benchmade Monochrome.

I lost the BM Monochrome unfortunately in Yalku, a lagoon in the Yucatan. :( :( :(

I gave the Ka-Bar folding hunter to my nephew, and brought back the Rivermaster. Nobody gave anything a second glance.

Thanks for the follow up! :D

Sorry about the MonoChrome :(
it's a good looking little knife. How did it work out while you had it?

It's great. Very sharp, easy to sharpen, stylish, thin. I had put it in the pocket of my bathing suit and went into a lagoon and somewhere along the line it was gone.

I ordered another, I love that knife!

I´m surprised I did not see this thread before today.

I would take a SAK, customs should not confiscate it if it is on your person or luggage when you come in. A not-too-big not-aggressive-looking lockback should get through with no problems, maybe a Gerber or a Buck Bucklite. You can buy a decent Spanish made Aitor lockback over here, Sears usually carries them as do some sporting shops.

BTW, I didn't see cheap knives in Mexico where we went (the Yucatan), and the knives I saw for sale were Victoronix et al, far inferior selection at a higher price than is available in the US.

True, you would really have to come to Mexico city, and even here know where to go (e.g. Sears for Aitor), I suggested Aitor because it tends to be less expensive, I know where to get a Spyderco but the price would be twice as much or more than in the USA, I also know places that carry SAKs cheaper and I take advantage of sales, things that you can only do if you live here.

Lest I appear in the least negative...I have to add that each time I travel to Mexico I appreciate it more and think it is a fantastic country.
