Please help me pick a good EDC for a new soldier

Possibly a BM Nimravus cub would be a good choice or Chris Reeve aviator if you want to go with a manageable sized fixed blade, also might want to look at Bark River Knife and Tool Mini and Micro Canadians. I love my new Spyderco R2 with Spyderedge. It's skeletonized and super slim, fits the pocket easily. CRKT M-16 SF may not be a bad choice either if you want something a little cheaper. I know some people here love the Extrema Ratio Golem and Nemesis Folders too.

Lagarto

sorry for the sloppy post, I've been up waaay too long.

I would go with a Benchmade Skirmish. 4.3" blade. They make a model 630BK-503 that has blade and handle BK1 blade coated for excellent corrosion resistance. It has a solid framelock, Minimal parts.

Leatherman Wave. One handed opening blades (tough to find on multitool). Two of them, you have choice of serrated and straight edge. Plus you get all the other tools at your disposal.

Many votes for the high quality multi-tool. He'll need the wire cutters at the bottom of the pliers for the plastic ziptie hand restraints that MP's use. Make sure that you get him a quality, close topped sheath for it.

I really like my TI leatherman charge. The expanded tool kit for it has the bits to tighten most of the common sighting accessories on a M4. That will come in real handy in the platoon room.

I'd avoid any D2 style steels in a knife blade I was giving to a new soldier, as he won't have access to a good sharpening system. I carry a D2 Benchmade, but I have a sharpmaker at my house. He probably won't have one.

Any of the folders lised would be a good choice, but remember that he'll probably be using them with gloves on. A longer handled knife will be easier to deploy and use.

Wish him luck,
Jeff
