Please help me pick a knife for my dad's 50th birthday..

The best knife to get him would be the one that you would like the most, if he has the ability to appreciate the same things you do.
It shows how much you care and that you would want the best for him.

I have been on a bark River kick lately and I gave my Dad my favorite knife. My barkriver fieldsman, it was a green micarta preproduction model.
I made a sheath for it which would carry it high rise and edge forward for a rightie. It was my best sheath yet and really looked pretty professional.
As a knife lover it was hard to give him this knife but it was the obvious choice. A sincere sacrifice denoting the love and devotion of an honored son. It was appreciated as much when received as when given.

The added plus is much of the Bark river line falls within your price range.

if you would like a great knife at a great price ... while it is not quite the slipjoint style you are looking at an all stainless delica or native (if the still make em) is imo the best knifves you can buy in said price range ... alose with alot of room to engrave them

It is bit more ($95) but what about Benchmade Opportunist?
Linerlock (if you mind, I certainly don't) with adjustable stop pin (great idea (for long term wear)), jigged aluminium scales (looks gooooood :)), wood backspacer and onlays, S30V steel, thumbstud (one sided). Clipless, if you mind (but has lanyard pin) and light.

C'mon, 50 ain't that old! ;)

You bet your bippy it's not.
(And if you remember where that came from, you're probably in your 50's also.):D

There may be snow on the roof, but there's still fire in the furnace.

Thanks for all the suggestions all. Very nice folks here on this site. I ended up going with the queen d2 stag bone whittler from here:

http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=QN48CSB

It just has that old fashioned grandpa pocket knife look that I like.

It sure does seem like most of the knife world has gone to the modern styled knives.

I have kinda physic'd myself up to want a knife myself now :)

....as for engraving..I think you guys are right to just forget about it. It seemed like a good idea, but i dont think it is practical and to scribble up a beautiful blade is not appealing to me either.

Thanks all,
JD

I gave my dad a swiss army knife last christmas engraved with his name on it. He was extremely grateful, and it became even more meaningful to him after he lost it and someone found it and returned it to him.

50 ain't old. He's a youngster. I would like to be 50 again but that was more years ago than I care to say. I normally like modern items but my taste in pocket knives is more traditional. I am partial to a good stockman knife. I have just ordered a Queen QN9CSB and a Queen QN3268. But that is my preference. What are his hobbies? Is there a SAK with the the tools that he would use? What would he most likely use it for?
