Please help me pick a new EDC

Hi guys. I am new to the forum and am hoping you can help me. I have been on the search for a good EDC for years and can't quite find the perfect one.

I started out with a Kershaw Scallion. This is a good knife and I liked it a lot. However, I had multiple times where it had to go back to Kershaw due to a broken torsion bar. They always took care of it, but I'd like something that is not assisted open to keep it simple.

Then, I bought a CRKT M16. Good knife but the clip kept getting loose and after a while, the blade started pitting. I was able to tighten up the clip and got most of the pitting off with some gun oil and steel wool, but I want something better.

Then, I bought a Spyderco Native. No spring, strong blade steel, it seemed perfect. Then, the clip quickly loosened and rotated to the point it damaged the handle. I still carry it occasionally, but I have removed the grip and Dremeled the scarred plastic on the handle.

I want something strong, durable, simple, rust resistant and won't bust the bank. Prefer no more than $60 or so. What do you guys suggest?

Oh... I already carry a lot of stuff in my pocket, so nothing too heavy either. Thanks in advance for the help.

i currently carry a kershaw leek in rotation with a benchmade monochrome and a benchmade minigriptillian and all three of theses are perfect for us pocket stuffers hope you find something good man

Welcome to Bladeforums! :)

I don't know why you've had those particular problems. Maybe just time and use. Folders are basically small, lightweight tools with moving parts.

Whatever you do get, I would suggest you check out our Maintenance, Tinkering, and Embellishment forum. Sometimes your own attention to keeping up with the normal wear and tear can extend the lifetime.

For example, a lot of guys here get new torsion bars from Kershaw and replace them themselves.

Suggestions, suggestions ... there will be plenty! :D Check out the Junkyard Dog, there's a small all-metal model, flipper, but no assisted opening.

Sounds like one of your common problems is the clips coming loose. Try taking the screws out and putting them back in with some blue Locktite.

As to the question though, there are tons of nice EDC's out there. If you don't mind not having pocket clip at all, try a Fallkniven U2. If you really do need the lip, try a Spyderco Paramilitary or a Benchmade 710.

For the real high end, its tough to go wrong with a Strider SnG or a CRK Sebenza.

Edit: Sorry, I missed the $60 thing. Try a Benchmade Griptilian/MiniGrip or a Spyderco Endura / Delica.

How about a Boker Trance or Kershaw Skyline. Both are real nice for the money. Good Luck! Kevin :D

The Skyline is a beautiful knife. Something about the lines remind me of my old Gerber Bolt Action, althouh mechanically it is a very different knife. The Trance is a real winner. You can move up in size to the Hyper or M-Type or down to the SubCom. Extremely solid construction. (You won't damage those clips!)

Hey there.... this is actually my first post on this forum. I've gotten some great info! I bought the Benchmade Minigrip based on all the positive feedback I've read here and else where. I took off the clip and am very pleased so far. Razor sharp, shaves hair:thumbup:

Damn.... now I want to buy more knives.... :D

+1 for Benchmade Griptilian. Might be selling for around $60.00. It is an excellent little cutter. Strong tip with good leverage.

bryd line? benchmade monochrome. and i recently just got a kershaw storm 2 from wally world. good solid build. and made in america! (suprised...since it was at walmart.)

peace.

Check out the Kershaw Sapphire if you're right-handed, If not, it's hard to beat a Benchmade Mini-Griptilian.
Welcome aboard!

If you are going to spend more that would be a real nice choice. I like the Benchmade 940 too. Good Luck! Kevin

Both are fine steels. For everyday carry, both will serve about as well. The 710 is a big, heavy-duty knife. Many people are surprised by how long the blade is when they get it. It's also the only axis lock knife I kept.
