Hello,
A friend of mine is looking for something and I am not sure what it is or where to get it. He is looking for "that chemical that patinates metal? It goes by various names such as "background black," "antique black," and so forth." Any info on where he can get this would be greately appreciated. Thank you.

Every metal alloy reacts differently so the chemical needed to cause patination varies.

The metal plating supply houses in your area are the place to approach first. Tell them what metal you are working with and what desired finish you are expecting.

Check the yelllow pages under plating and polishing supplies.

I would check out companies that supply the stained glass business/hobby. My friend has about 20 different chemicals that produce different patinas on different metals. I use one of them to turn my Sandblasted logos Black! The biggest supplier for this is Hudson Glass in Peekskill, NY. I dont have the # or address.

Hi Louis,

One of the places I found is called:
Sur-Fin Chemical Corp.

They have solutions for different metal types as well as a variety of patina and such; Green, Black, Antique, Rust,Gun Metal Nickle....)

See if this is what your looking for.

If you don't mind, could you let me know what it works out like.

Thanks.

If you check with Sheffields Knifemakers Supply I think you will find what you are looking for. I use their products and I'm happy with them. Here's something I found out by accident. I put some of Brownells Oxpho-Blue on some bronze and it turned it a dark brown with some blue highlights. If you need some addresses and phone numbers e-mail me and I'll send them to you.
