Please help with this dumb question

I often read about the various elements that comprise a blade steel. However, when I add up the percentages it never comes to 100%. For example, BG-42 is comprised of:

Carbon 1.15%
Silicone .30%
Manganese .50%
Chromium 14.5%
Molybdenum 4.0%
Vanadium 1.2%

Total = 21.65

What is the other 78.35% ??

Don't worry about questions - everybody started somewhere. Heck, when I was first aware of this hobby I emailed Don Fogg with probably the dumbest questions he had ever heard of. Don was pretty patient, though.

Lots of really dumb questions that probably made the rounds as horror stories. I remember it was something like "I haven't seen japanese-style blades like yours at the knife supply store.. Where do you buy your blades from?"

I found out pretty quickly that there are people in this day and age that actually make knives from a crude bar of steel.
