I’m a College Lecturer/Electrician and a part time knife maker (and former Pistol shooter) living in the UK… after suffering at the hands of a government who seek to disarm the innocent, whilst protecting the rights of the guilty, we (myself and my wife) have decided that we have had enough!
We are looking to re-locate, and would appreciate any help that we could find, as regards jobs, visa’s (work permits), monetary donations small and large (one can live in hope)
smile.gif
…. Anyway, we would like to find out what it would entail to ‘emigrate’ to the US. After reading Mr Heston’s speech on Liberty and freedom, it made me realise just how repressed we are here in the UK. Not only did I lose my right to enjoy a sport which I have participated in for over fifteen years, but also now it seems that anyone who has an interest in knives (especially someone who makes them) is just asking for trouble!

This is a genuine request, and I would be most grateful to receive a response from anyone who could offer constructive advice.

Yours Truly

Welcome to Bladeforums. Welcome to America!

Where do you begin? Well, for a start, you better check out the technical details at a US embassy or consulate, to find out the requirements. Word of mouth will lead you astray when it comes to government paperwork.

As far as getting work, we are looking at something like overemployment now, which means you should be able to find something, depending on your background and skills. But not all those jobs are the greatest.

Don't get caught up in the media focus on the big iundustrial areas -- check out opportunities in the eminently civilized but less intrusive and much less overcrowded heartland.

If you have an idea of what you want to do, you might check websites for companies you could work for. Many of them list job opportunities, and some even solicit resumes by e-mail. Search Yahoo or whatever for Jobs and you'll find more than you'll know what to do with.

Good luck!

Welcome to the Forums
I'd second the not living in the city part. Find a town that's large enough to have what youneed but not so big that you can't have a yard. Second go look at www.monster.com and put a resume there your bound to find a job through them. Many companies will even give a bonus (probably wouldn't payall your costs) for you tomove to them. Hope this helps at least some

First off, Welcome to BFC!!!

Second, Stay away from New Jersey!!!
eek.gif

Third, Stay away from both the east & west coasts and any cities in between.

Fourth, go for the southwest or midwest.
These states still offer freedom.

Fifth, if I was going to relocate, I would be looking at Montana. That's a truly free (as far as you can get) state. Montana would be a great place to start up a knife making business.
*Note-Bozeman, Montana has a college.

Good Luck!!!!

...or. During the 1940's, only a handful of rebels defended the Warsaw ghetto. In the early 1950's after Bastista fell, the affluent Cubans fled to America. In 1975, the citizens of Saigon sought to abandon their own country to for a Huey ride out.
I'm sorry to hear you're hitting a bad patch. Here's a thought. Would standing your ground in your own country be so bad? I don't know if people who want to abandon their own country make MY country any better.--OKG

Please, save yourself alot of headache and relocate to the SOUTH. Here you will find as much political freedom that is available in the USA. lots of work. Warm weather, and friendly people. My wife is Scottish and she loves it here. If you need any assistance please feel free to ask. Richard.

OKG,

Everyone in the US (including the indians) abandoned their original homeland at somepoint. We are all a bunch of outcasts, we know it, we work at it, and we are that much better for it.

BTW the Warsaw Ghettos were lost, and the wealthy Cubans were outnumbered by 10 to 1, etc. Sometimes we need to fight and sometimes a strategic retreat is the best policy.

Brit Guy, your best alternative would be to obtain sponsorship from an American employer. Most large companies have established departments dedicated to relocating their present and future employees. Try some of the U.S. Universities.

Welcome and Good luck.

my brother is marrying an aussie, and i can tell you it will take a lot of time, money, paperwork, and pacience.it is not easy to become a citizen of the u.s.,
but dont just give up.after the paperwork is over, and your on your way, you'll be thankful you stuck it out.we cant pick a president, but this is still a hell of a country.
welcome!

Welcome to the forum - and hopefully to the U.S. My ex-wife is from Ulster -she's also a good pistol shooter! Want a warmer climate and year 'round outdoor activities?? Try Arizona - lots of electronic companies - Honeywell, Motorola, etc. - many Colleges, Universities & trade schools - economy is booming and there aren't enough people for the available positions. Charleton Heston would be happy!

It's pretty easy for a technical professional to get in and get a job on an H1B visa. But, if your goal is citizenship and a permanent stay, avoid the H1B. Aside from the fact that H1B is a form of indentured servitude for foreign workers, it is deliberately difficult to go from H1B to citizen.

My advice would be to call the US Embasy nearest you and ask 'em. Fortunately, the UK is not hostile toward such a move, so there's no great reason to hide your interest. Call and ask.

Be sure and mention how much you admire our presidential election process.

And if you're coming here, you might as well start thinking W!

If you're picking a pro-freedom state with a good economy, the best are in the South or Northwest. If you're in high-tech, I'd recommend the Seattle, Dallas/Ft. Worth and Atlanta areas. I'd call those three the largest "high tech growth" towns that are in states that allow widespread concealed weapons permit issuance, a key sign that they're basically "pro-freedom".

Three others to look at that are a bit smaller are the Boise, Idaho area, Pheonix Arizona is OK but *hot* and parts of Utah are booming. Those three states are generally even more pro-freedom than Texas (where Dallas is), Georgia (Atlanta) and Washington State (Seattle).

There's also Vermont, which is unique in that you don't need a prior permit to walk down the street with a concealed firearm. The other states listed are among the 30 states where the permits are issued on a fair basis (in other words, meet the requirements such as training and background check and you WILL get the permit). But Vermont is a very small state with not a lot of jobs. Neigboring New Hampshire is OK, but it's really no better in terms of jobs...those are mostly in surrounding states that are massively anti-freedom such as Massachussets and New York, both rapidly heading England's direction. So while Vermont is tempting, avoid it.

Brit guy- Welcome to the forums. DO NOT move to northern Minnesota unless you are a glutton for punishment. Just got in from shoveling snow, temperature about -20 w/windchill factor. I've never checked out the online job services, but I bet they would be a good place to start. Good luck.

After living is So. California for 12 yrs., I can only say: AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE. Arizona would be a good choice.
smile.gif

Go for Washington State.

As Jim stated, we have high tech jobs in the Seattle area,(west side of state), and various jobs(lots of agriculture based, and the Hanford Nuclear reservation is here) on this side of the state.(east)
Washington is a "shall issue" state, so if your criminal record is clean, and once you become a citizen, you will be able to obtain a Concealed Pistol permit. The only restrictions on knives here are no auto's, and some localities have restrictions on blade length when "just carrying". That does not include hunting type knives when carried for it's intended purpose.

The states I'd live in if I were to move would be Oregon, Idaho, Montana,Washington (of course), and Arizona. I have had absolutely no trouble with freedom here, and I carry my pistol everywhere I go. Only place you cannot carry a concealed pistol is a Federal building,Schools, and Tavern's. Some other places have restrictions, but those are their house rules, not law.

I wish you the best wherever you go.

Get that resume posted on monster.com, and find a job, so you can tell the government here you won't be a welfare case. That will be highly favorable.

Brit guy,
Hurry the hell up and get over here. We need all the freedom loving individuals we can muster.

By the way, everybody here is just pulling your leg when they tell you about all the paperwork you need to gain permanent entrance into the U.S. It's not necessary at all. The easiest way to become a permanent resident of the U.S. is to first relocate to Tijuana, Mexico. The day after you arrive in Tijuana, wait until it gets dark and then just get in line with all the thousands of others marching north across the border. Don't worry, there's no danger, this border isn't really guarded anymore. Now, when you get to the border you'll be handed a Democratic voter registration card. Tear it up! Based upon what you've stated here already you won't be wanting one of those. Just keep on marching north until you hit Seattle. It's a beautiful city with weather not too unlike that which found in Britain. It has a good high tech economy working and there's a possibility that the forces of freedom may yet prevail in this state. Good luck!

Now, let me get this straight. You claim that one of your problems with your own govenment is that they 'let in too many refuges.' So your plan is to come to my country? Sounds disingenuous to me.
People of your political beliefs are not being rounded up and shot. Ultimately, you get the govenment you deserve. My suggestion is to stay in your country and vote.
My fellow forumite, not2sharp, pointed out that some repressed people could not struggle since they were out-numbered. The 'Texicans' at the Alamo numbered 110, and they were surrounded by over 3,500 Mexican troops. Since when does upholding a principle depend solely on numbers?
If I sound strident to you, be advised that there are lots of cemeteries throughout the world with rows of little white crosses of my countrymen who died for the freedom of foreignors. Everyone comes to America; in many cases they build 'little Havanas,' or 'little Saigons' and perpetuate the mess here. Several Americans during this last election wanted health-care "like Canada." And Americans are expected to go on sacrificing our youngest and brightest to in turn have our founding principles trampled on.
Sir, until Britain is awash with gunfire and mass executions, spare me the 'tyranny' issue. We have Bill and Hillary and some of the most Draconian firearms laws in decades. If we can tough it out here, you can tough it out there.--OKG

WOW, OKG! Now, tell us what you really think!

WARNING! THE PREVIOUS STATEMENT WAS MEANT AS HUMOR!

But seriously, you could look at it this way: at least, if he Brit guy continues with his current political leanings, once he gets his citizenship, he will be one more for the good guys.
smile.gif

Oh, and Brit guy... stay away from Maryland and D.C. Unless you want to come all the way to the ol' US of A and get the same crap (or nearly) that you are getting in Great Britain.

I think you have it wrong OKG, for a start, I would have no intention of ‘building a little Havana’ or perpetuating ‘mess’ of any kind. All I would like to do is join a community of like minded individuals (instead of sheep). Also I would gladly contribute to the community and would not require “free” anything thank you all the same! You don’t sound “Strident” OKG, you’re just giving your opinion; but I know if I had some guy who wanted to fight along side me, I would take him over ten dozen who wouldn’t. As for the “you get the government you deserve…” now that is crap! Most of the poor unfortunates who are cajoled into believing the propaganda churned out by the powers that be, would believe that the moon was made from prime beef steak if they were told so. Unfortunately the British population (most of them) are led to believe that they have no right to stand up for their rights… unfortunate, but that’s the way it is. As for me, I would just like the chance to work, pay tax and continue to make knives… and get my pistols back! And vote… hell we do, but we still end up getting shafted!
No offence intended OKG, just expressing an opinion… as did you.

Old Knife Guy,
Read some history man, this country was started by people who didn't like their country, and came here. What language do you speak? I guess you live in "Little England".

Brit Guy,
Good luck with your move. I wish I had some practical advice, but I don't know a thing about emigrating to another country. You may want to look into Kentucky for a possible state. Kentucky has very good laws if you are interested in firearms. Hand Gun Control Inc gave it an F- I believe, which translates to an A+ if you like guns. The weather is good, with four seasons, none of which are too severe. If you have any pollen allergies you may want to look elsewhere though, and the summers are very humid. People are mostly friendly as long as you are too. The cost of living is damn good compared to the coasts.

Oh yes, pay no mind to the xenophobes. They are not in the majority here.

Paul
