I would like to know what the dimensions are for a "classic"
Cowboy bowie. Clip blade with oval guard, coffin handle.
Blade length? Blade width? Blade thickness? Handle length? Should sheath have a belt loop or stud? Any help along these lines would be greatly appreciated.

David,The classic Cowboy Bowie can be any of the old Sheffield paterns along with the frontier rustic and civil war knives...The basic is a stag handled 5-6 inch clip point with a leather sheath that fits a gun belt. The throat and tipped sheaths from that time didn't hold up to the wear on a horse so they were discarded most of the time.THE BLADE WIDETHS WOULD RANGE FROM 1 INCH TO 1 1/2 INCHES AND THE BLADE THICKNESS WOULD RANGE FROM 3/16 TO 1/4 ( some could have been as little as 1/8" and some as thick as 5/16")..
The Movies dressed up allot of the knives and they were not even from the proper time perioed...If you look back at the old original photo's you will see everything from Price daggers to stag handled ruff forged to fancy Sheffield designs..
If you need some ideas of older knives to look at just give me a shout and I will email you some out of the books I have.
