Hi,

I know nothing about knives but I want to buy a birthday gift for a close friend. In conversations he mentioned he really liked the A. G. Russell™ 7-1/2" 1861 Pattern Bowie with Desert Ironwood Handle. I have looked at this knife and it costs $325, which I cannot afford. Is there a way to get this knife for $100 or less. Or is there a knife that is very similar to this that he would like. (He wants a pretty good one for when he goes to Iraq in December with the Guard)
He said he likes a hard knife (58-61) with a belly, a guard on the handle, and a full tang would be better. Also with a drop point or straight point.

Thanks

Jo

A.G. Russell often designs and produces knives you can't get anywhere else. As far as I know that's the only place to get the 1861 pattern Bowie without going to a custom maker and of course that would cost at least as much money and take much longer to get. All I can think of in the $100 or less range are some of the smaller Blackjacks, if you go a little higher there are the larger Blackjacks like the Trailguide II and Model 5. Also check out the Marbles offerings.

Welcome to Bladeforums! :D

I'd like to support you in getting a knife like that for your friend, but $100 isn't much for a big, high-end bowie. I did come across some good ones under $200 in the A.G.Russell catalog, anywhere from $150 - 180.

Let's see if someone else joins in here with more ideas.
