I'm attempting to harden, then temper a blade about the same size as a Bark River golok.

The blade is from an old ferrier's file which I shaped on the bench grinder and belt grinder.

I heated the roughed out blade in my BBQ grill until it was red hot, then quenched it in some 30 weight motor oil.

Now what do I do?

Please help!

I don't think the grill will cut it as far as heat treatment. I know I can get my woodstove hotter than my BQ grill and was told that wouldn't cut it.

You have to get it a little past non-magnetic (around 1450F). A BBQ may not do that without a blower attachment. The other thing is that many farrier rasps won't harden. They do make great tomahawks, with a carbon steel bit added in the fold..
