I sold a truck and now have a little extra money to get a new knife with, I just can't decide which one. I know it is a personal thing but I would still like to hear what you all have to say. I am looking at getting one of these two
1. A Kershaw Lahar

2. Benchmade 710

and sending it to Tom Krein for a regrind. Which do you think would be better for a regrind? I have owned a 710 before and I liked it, but the edge was too thick (the regrind will take care of that), but I have never handled a Lahar. Any help will be appreciated.

No one on a public internet forum has an opinion? What's next, someone says a Sebenza is junk? Come on guys I need your help, I would like to get one ordered by tomorrow as I have a full work week before my next day off.

You want a Krein laser? Find a Mini Cyclone TI/ZDP.
Thanks for the suggestion. I have been wanting to pick one up, but it is a little out of my price range and I just don't feel that need to have it. I am also trying to keep the knife as simple as possible so speedsafe isn't at the top of my list. I would like to keep it under $150 after the regrind, if I put too much into it, I would just get a sebenza. I would spend a little more for the right knife though.

I'd take a BM 710 over the Lahar.

The Lahar is a really nice knife for the money but the 710 is built more heavily, and I like the Axis Lock more than the liner lock.

If you want a liner lock knife, rather than the Lahar I'd go with a Lone Wolf T-2.
The Spyderco Military is a great knife as well.

A couple of other knives I'd look at at are the Spyderco Manix and Chinook 3.

I'd agree with rifon2, the axis lock is nice, but than the Manix is really nice...
now I dont know what to buy :P

Looks like you're looking for a big healthy durable knife.

I prefer the Benchmade Axis lock/thumbstuds over liner-locks and Spydy hole lockbacks.

The Benchmade 710 will hold it's value well if you decide to trade/sell it later.

You may also want to consider diamond stones and reprofile it yourself.

at it's price is a STEAL! Granted, it is a liner-lock, but it's darn well executed! It's made in Japan, vs. USA for the 710. It's got G-10, as does the BM 710. It's got VG-10, vs. D-2 on the 710, which I'd take (VG-10) any day of the week over D-2. It has a small bit of recurve, just like the 710. It's got a flipper, which the 710 doesn't. With the savings you'd get by buying the Lahar over the 710, you could buy yourself a cool little knife like a Boker Subcom, too.

Ever consider a Lil Temp? They've been popping up frequently the past few weeks.

I would also take the Lahar over the 710, or a Spyderco over either of them. I've started to buy a 710 several times, but each time I've handled one, it's just fallen too far outside of what I like in a knife.

The 710 blade is longer and thinner than I like, the Lahar is just about perfect. The handle is uncomfortable for me to hold, so I figure it won't get better as I work with it. I don't like recurves, so both knives lose out there, although I've found that a wider blade with a recurve is easier for me to touch up than a thinner one... don't have any idea why. Axis locks (and Ball Locks and Arc Locks) aren't my favorite for heavy use because of the springs. That's just one more place for a potential failure, even though it's never happened to me and I do own and use Axis locks.

Having said all of that, I'd take 1) a Spyderco Paramilitary or 2) a Spyderco Sage before I'd take either the Lahar or the 710. The Para is available in CPM D2 or S30V, the Sage is S30V. And neither one will need a regrind to cut well. They're both flat ground with an excellent edge bevel for slicing... all day long.

Dalefuller, gave good advice.
Me, I just bought a Case Sodbuster and so should you! $25. :)

I am really only looking at those two knives, not for any particular reason, I just like them and have the want to buy them. I have or do own almost all of the knives everyone suggested: Paramillie(two of those), Manix, Sodbuster, ect. I am leaning more towards the 710, I have already owned one so I know I like it. Neither knife will see very hard use, a cardboard box or a small sapling will be the biggest things I cut, and no prying I have a SAK for that. One consideration for me is the warranty of both companies. I know Kershaw has the best, I have dealt with them before. But BM, I am wanting to do a little customizing of each knife like drill holes in the liners to lighten it up a little, add a choil here, round off a corner there, ect. I am pretty sure BM would just laugh at me if I told them to fix anything. I don't plan on breaking it though and if I do have to replace anything I can always buy a junk 710 to strip parts off of. Anyway, keep the suggestions rolling.

Good post and one I agree with wholeheartardly, especially the part about having enough to also get a Boker Subcom. I just picked up a Wharcom last week and it has worked out great! The Lahar has a nice solid feel to it.

New Graham has a black 710 for about 120 I think. That black blade would look really good with a high flat grind. (with the upper part of the blade and spine still black ) The grind would be satin. Go look at a Microtech Wharcliffe on their website. That two tone blade looks really good.

IMHO.

I would go with Kershaw  Great knives for the $$$ !;)
With the extra $ you save you could also get your self a nice Vic. SAK , Everyone needs a good S.A.K. :p

BJE, here's a link to a Krein regrind of the Lahar one of the Kershaw regulars had done (nice pics included)....clicky!
