I have been watching what appears to be an Extrema Ratio MPC on Ebay for quite a while. The knife has a very odd title, and its description is vague and has wrong info, however the knife in the photo seems to show a very legitimate Extrema Ratio MPC knife. I am aware of the fact that there have been many reported fakes of Extrema Ratio knives on Ebay, but Can someone please tell if if this knife is the real deal or not? Any and all help is appreciated.

The knife is a fake.

1. The serrations are all wrong for the MPC.
2. The price is impossibly low for an authentic MPC.
3. The seller is in China
-- that's a big warning you will have no recourse when the fake arrives.

Another thing to note is that the paperwork laid underneath the knife is for Smith & Wesson.

What can be said about the quality of a non-authentic extrema ratio knife? are they comparable to the real thing?

What are the odds that a knockoff knife from China made in 440 series steel for 5 bucks is going to be anything comparable?

I mean I certainly don't hate on the Chinese. In fact, I'm Chinese myself. But I have learned over time that buying outrageously cheap ripoffs of existing, quality products usually never turns up good results.

well i've never owned an extrema ratio knife, so i only have what people say about them to go by, which is precisely why i'm asking you guys. :D

The why you shouldn't buy knockoffs checklist:
They are using someone else's design. It's theft
Their manufacturing standards are going to be lower than the original.
The materials aren't going to be as good as the original.
Buying knockoffs steals money from the original company driving up the cost of the original. Since the knockoff company is making money they will increase production which will hurt sales of the original driving the price of the original up even more.

There is no comparison at all. To use an analogy, you are talking Old syle Volkswagon Beetle compared to a brand new modern day Lotus.

I hope you did not buy it. Or I hope you like real cheap knock offs. Makes me real mad when a person in this country goes through all the trouble of the design process. patent process, manufacturing process to try and compete with real deal stuff and then some jerk can just swipe a design just because he lives in another country. Makes me sweat lead. Especially when real deception is used as is this case. In the future I would check on the manufacturers website for materials used and price asked. When you see a knife with a Manufactuers suggested price of lets just throw out a number $56.75 US then you see a knife on E-Bay that looks like the same knife for $12.99 that should alert you at first glance and make you turn and run the other direction. If you did buy it at least it was a cheap lesson. I hope in the end you are able to get a good deal on the real knife. Shop around, it pays. But shop with the intention of saving 5 to ten bucks or so, but not 45 dollars cheaper. We have a manufactures corner right on this site. I do not know if Extreem Ratio is one of them but it doesn't hurt to look.

My two cents.
Daniel

PS: I saw where you stated you are Chinese yourself. This could have nothing to do with a Chinese person at all. It could be a ignorant redneck american drawing and selling info to the Chinese. Of course neither is right in doing this. The copying and manufacturing. But what can I say our government is to busy spending money bombing countries and then spending money to rebuild them instead of taking care of it own people and its hard work and patents. But that is the world we live in today. Sad to say.

LOL... really, that wasn't a serious question was it?

If it was, I have a bridge for sale.

Yup definately an easy to spot fake. As far as quality of that cheap knockoff goes, it would be comparable to any of the cheap flee market knives that you see sold at gas stations and the like. Mystery pot metals, sharp corners, very weak blade coating, poorly executed (and possibly dangerous if you are a knife abuser like many newbies) lock, just all around horrible quality.

I don't know how much the knife was selling for because the auction is now over (I really hope your not the buyer) but you can find some good quality Kershaws for a very reasonable price that would blow any knockoff out of the water for sure.

I clicked the link and it's a S&W Sawtooth: "New Sawtooth Tactical Survival Folding Knife Sporting" Winning bid: US $4.99 ;)

This listing also uses a technique I've to now only seen in fake Rolex auctions. It never says outright in the auction what the item is, so often EBay won't remove it for copyright infringement.

I've seen a hundred auctions for fake watches using that tactic- a "Luxury Man Watch" title with a Rolex Datejust fake in the auction- but this is the first for a knife.

Extrema Ratios and Buck Striders are huge when it comes to fakes on Ebay... I was inches away from clicking the buy it now button on a number of those auctions but there's a reason they are all chinese sellers with 0-5 auctions under their belt. By the time you leave feedback the account doesn't exist anymore.

Don't waste money on fakes. It's probably made from the same steel that is in your kitchen sink and has about the same hardness. You always have to be careful with those things because your safety is also an important aspect. You would not want that knife closing on your hand with a lot of pressure on it. :thumbdn:

I think you're confusing what the OP said with what I said. I'm the Chinese guy not him as far as I'm aware.

The quality difference is....one snaps on your fingers and one doesn't. Luckily when it snaps on your fingers the blade isn't worth a "****" and you only take a minor cut but still you'll learn.

I bought a used Nemesis off the Bay from a guy in China maybe two years ago (?), he was selling a couple of ERs as used for very low reserves. After I won it and realized he was in China I was worried that it would be a fake, but when it arrived it sure seemed like the real deal, very high quality. Now it may be that he was selling off real ones he didn't want anymore, or that they were the real ones that were used as the models to make copies from. Or it may be that they make a very fine counterfeit. BUT even if the build quality it top notch, who knows about the steel type and heat-treat. And that's without considering the issue of total design theft and corresponding utter lack of decency.

Hi folks -

One thing that I would add here, in terms of dealing with ebay sellers, I never would deal with a seller who has all of the items for sale listed as "private" when you look at seller feedback.

Additionally, this seller has a couple of customers who have posted feedback saying that the knife the buyer received was a 'replica', and that the seller would not return emails or money.

I normally only buy from sellers with spotless feedback, and ideally the seller will have several hundred sales under their belts.

Case in point - I recently bought a nice Puma Skinner on the 'bay as a gift for a friend.

There were several available for different prices, but I found one seller who had impeccable feedback and many sales. Their price + shipping was not the rock bottom best price, but it was right there.

I bought the knife, and when it was delivered, the knife had a pretty serious blemish on the guard.

I contacted the seller, and they bent over backwards - sending me a new knife on the day that I sent them the return-confirmation number, and the seller immediately offered to pay return shipping as well.

It pays to seek out and patronize the best sellers.

best regards
