I have some fungi growing in front of the house. Central Oregon coast.
Any clue what they are. They are 2 to 3.5 inches tall.

I'm not an expert, but they look to be Shaggy Mane's. They are edible until they get old, then they get inky on the inside.

yup coprinus comatus, excellent mushroom. if ya pic them keep them turned upside down or they will turn to an inky mess. I'm not kidding. It works.
enjoy, Ted

Thanks you may be right. I just looked them up and they do look right. I'd never heard of them before.
Still, I will 100pct ID them before cooking.
Ted, you posted as I was writing this.

What Mike said, especially about not being an expert. The Auduban field guides are very helpful, as are many web resources.

Get an expert ID before you eat them. If they are Coprinus atramentarius (alcohol inky cap) they are poisonous. They resemble unexpanded Coprinus comatus.

You should eat only young caps and prepare immediately.

I would say shaggy main for sure! There to long and narrow and more "shaggy" :D for Coprinus atramentarius.

I herd they are better raw though...

They're called the Shaggy Ink Cap here.

The other one, the Alcohol Ink Cap, isn't poisonous per se, and you can get a feed off them. They become toxic in interaction with alcohol. No alcohol, no problem.

Who here is willing to swear off alcohol for a week?

I'll put my hand up for that amigo. I do drink vodka occasionally, but alcohol is my least preferred drug. It's a welli boot compared to a ballet slipper.

She Who Must be Obeyed asks what these are.
Any IDers?
