Hi,

Live blade training Wednesday ended in ER. Looks like a severed flexor-tendon in my hand but no nerve damage. I will see the surgeon at 2:15 PM (EST) today to get more info & set up surgery (probably for next week).

Later.

Dave

I wish you the best, hopefully it will heal without permanent negative effects.

Ouch! If its "only" a tendon...no nerve damage...then you should be fine. I've seen some hand surgeons do some pretty amazing things. :-) Good luck! Be sure and let us know how things are going.

Dave,

I hope everything goes OK and the surgery is 100% sucessful. Is it your dominant hand or your checking hand?

Kelvin

Quick update!

Surgery is scheduled for this Monday @ 8:45 AM (EST). The doc explained the proceedure to me and is confident that I'll have full use once it's all over which will be in about 3 months including therapy.

I'm sure Keith can elaborate on the proceedure, but in a nut shell they'll make incisions @ 90 degree angles on either side of the laceration to get to the ends of the tendon. The doc drew on my finger to illustrate and this is what I saw "/\/\". Being optomistic I thought "How ironic!". Then he explained that if the ends have started to pull back they would extend the incisions until they found them and this is what I saw "/\/\/\/\/\/\". Suddenly, I wasn't in a joking mood.

Later ....

Dave: Limited experience as I've only had to consult with a hand surgeon once (minor stuff), but I concur with Myers; among Md.'s those guys generally have a VERY good reputation.

Being a pessimist myself, if the doc said you'll have 100% recovery in 3 months, I look at 99.9% back in 4, as worst case scenario. Keep us posted.

My better half, She Who Must be Obeyed tells me she'll talk to The Man for you at church tomorrow. ( I'll invoke the Triple Moon Goddess myself, just to cover all bases.

)

In any case, go easy on yourself about the accident; happens to the best of us.

Once you're well and fit, drop me a line and I'll be happy to recount how I broke my toe doing Kata, smashed an oak coffee table with an elbow drop,(slipped) and , of course, my celebrated nose block.

Be well.

LIVE BLADE TRAINING, Man you are brave. I prefer trainers myself.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Accidents happen and they happen quickly. I hope that all heals well and soon.

I lead the Sunday afternoon and evening services at my synagogue; your name is going on the healing list.

When you have the chance and the inclination, Dave, tell us what difference (besides getting cut!) working with live steel made. I expect there was a difference in epinephrine flow, in lack of fluidity and dexterity - but those are my expectations.

Expectations are not necessarily the same as experience. You now have experience. Please share what you can.

This was 30 yrs.ago and the Doc,who was flown in from Seattle, re attached nerves. There is a little tenderness and a slight numbness in my trigger finger. No big deal.Ignorable, don`t sweat it.I`m sure that they are much better now.

It is a bit different than a flesh wound, isn`t it?Kind of gets your attention.

Dave,
I would be very interested in knowing what drill or technique you were working on and what went wrong. I have done various types of live blade training and I too have some scars, but all minor. Prayers for a full recovery, are headed your way from the great Northwest.

First of all, thanks to all for your thoughts, prayers and well wishes. The surgeon declared yesterday's surgery a success! He re-attached the tendon and expects me to br back @ 100% in 3-4 months.

The /\/\/\ incision runs from the tip of my index finger into my palm, just below the finger's base. Hand hurts, but the purcoset (sp?) helps

Now a few questions to answer....

Kelvin, it's my right/dominant hand.

Student, as Smoke said it's a kick ... until you f*ck up. It takes you to another level. The "high" can be addictive ... seductive. You're moving quickly but your perception is that it's all in slow motion. I remember watching as the edge opened up my flesh.

FNG, yes it is different than a flesh wound of which I have a few! It got my attention so well that had it been a real fight, I'd probably be dead!

Protector, we were doing empty hand tapping & passing vs the blade amongst other things, but more important than the technique/drill was my attitude/mindset. I was doing very well and got cockey, thought that I was in control of the blade. Just for a moment, I failed to give the devil it's due and didn't respect the blade ... I learned my lesson the hard way.

The live blade is not for everyone, but a word to the wise for anyone who choses it ... there's no room for your ego, respect the blade.

My hand is killing me & meds are kicking in, gotta go.

Dave.
