Please Pray for those in the path of Hurricane Katrina

I went through Andrew and anyone that did will tell you its not just the horror of the storm its the months after that people suffer.

Lot of people are going to need help for a long time after.

Some people CAN'T run because of illness, animals, etc. My parents are one and I stay to help them in case anything happens, because if it does, I'm the only one able to do anything.

Someone just e-mailed me a forecast from the feds. Sounds really, REALLY bad. Property devistation on a scale to match cities bombed flat in WWII. "All" residential gable roofs gone. Modern steel high-rise buildings swaying dangerously, losing all glass and some failing entirely. Even low concrete block building suffering severe damage. Trees gone with few exceptions. Pray for the 100,000 left in the city. The folks who got out won't be going back for weeks/months if the forecast is right.

Smoke going up for Mike and his family, and for all the folks on the gulf coast in the path of this monster. Saving a special prayer for the poor, homeless, and anybody else for whom getting "out of Dodge" ain't the least bit easy, if even possible.

Like Azis, I remember Hurricane Andrew all to well. I was stationed at Homestead AFB at the time, and I will never, ever, try to ride out a hurricane again. This one's going to be real bad, and like he said, surviving is just the start of what can be a long and trying ordeal. Folks are going to need whatever help we can send their way.

I feel bad about the whole thing. You can burn in a forest fire in Ca. A tornado can take you in Kansas. People who live in Florida will get hurricanes. There are calculated risks everywhere. But the poor folks of New Orleans, historic place that it is, live in a large bowl below sea level. Their sea walls are not high enough.

I heard FEMA has models of a slow moving class 4 or 5 hurricane hitting New Orleans with casualties of 60,000.

Forgive me, but after massive loss of life, oil shortages, trillions of dollars lost, how much would a adequate sea wall have cost, and why did we wait?

The only thing I know and have to do is pray.

Been praying and will continue. I just realized that one of the newspapers I applied to is just SW of New Orleans in the town of Houma. Their online newspaper is providing some great coverage.

I guess I'm lucky that I wasn't hired. But oddly enough, I wish I was down there helping out. I doubt they'll get around to filling that spot now. But my heart goes out to them and everyone down in that region. This might be the end of New Orleans as we know it. That old city is going to take a beating :(

A little good news... as of 1:00 a.m., Katrina just dropped down to a Cat. 4 storm. Unfortunately, it is right at the top level of being a Cat 4 (155 mph winds). That really isn't great news... but a little I guess.

Ad, I'll put you in my prayers also.

They've got sustained winds of 135 with gusts to 160. It's 40 miles east of New Orleans.

Direct hit, one levee has ruptured, reports of structural collapse. Smoke and prayers go out to everyone there... I have coworkers down there.

My God. Smoke and urgent prayers to anybody in this one's path, and those who love them.

It has been downgraded to a CAT 3, that's like saying would you rather be hit by a Locomotive or a Mac Truck!!

Smoke going out... Looks like it might not have hit New Orleans head on, but a little off to the side. Lets hope so.

At the same time, I can't even imagine all those small towns that did get hit head on, and they damage they'll receive.

MR, it may be a while before you can read this, but you are in our thoughts.
