Is there much i can do besides applying something such as mineral oil on the blade edge? (And how often do you apply oil?).

Are there any other valuable tips?

Thanks in advance!

After you use it, wash it off. Apply your favorite lube (or rig rag). Good to go. I personally use marine tuff cloth or if I don't have it around, any oil.

Renaissance wax is very good stuff. Apply it after each use. A little goes a long way.

Mate, as long as you keep the knife clean and dry you really won't have much issues with rust on SR-101.
I've never had any problems, I just use the knives on fruit & veggies or raw beef to get some natural patina going.
The tendency to rust of SR-101 is way overblown

Using it keeps the rust off of mine. For bare areas that don't see much contact oil works. I personally have been experimenting with a good wash, hair dryer to heat it up....then apply an auto cleaning wax and polish it once dry. Has worked great as a barrier against moisture and when you chop with it the wax enhances penetration.

heh.

I had no problem with your post at all until the hair dryer. It's true that a knife that's used doesn't rust much. It's true that if you use a bit of oil on the parts that don't see use it will help.

...... this for the most part.

Care for it just as you would any other knife (wash off the crud and dry it) and you will be just fine. I keep a shaving brush that has a good dose of mineral oil on it and brush it over my blades if they are getting put away for any length of time.

SR101 is no more rust prone than any other carbon steel.

I always make sure to clean the blade after use and dry it off. In the past I have used ren wax, frog lube, wd40, and mineral oil. All work fine but pretty much have stuck with mineral oil now just in case I want to use the blade for food prep.

Just using a hair dryer to make sure I get as much moisture off the blade as possible as to not trap it under the wax. Who knows. ...maybe I'm totally waiting my time? Just trying to offer my 2 cents and share what works for me.

Use it often and it won't have time to rust. For storing mineral oil is your friend, and as Garth said food safe.

Cut a bunch of red meat, citrus fruit, apples, banana peels, pork, fish, deer, and more red meat. Dont forget to use it to cut your steak sauce soaked steaks with it too. Wash with HOT dishsoapy water after each use and wipe dry.

Doing this has kept my stripped and satin sr101 rust free.

It looks to be a rainy weekend here,, I'll do some testing with polished SR101 and post pics later

Thank you all!
I keep all my blades reguarly oiled so hopefully that is enough.

I must admit, reading reviews which commonly mentioned sr101 rusting very easily had me worried.
But a few folks like yourself Andy, have said it is blown out of proportion, so i am glad to hear that!
Havent had much problem on the edge with my 1095 coated blades, but i think i jumped to the conclusion that sr101 was more rust prone than 1095 based on what i have read.

And thanks rcb that would be great!

I just keep a spray bottle of wd40 around.. spray the blade now an then and wipe it all over the blade.. this helps when batoning as well. Just be sure the exposes edge has a fresh coat before storage. A real light coat is all ya need an it takes like 2 seconds.. :D

You can look over in the stripped BG or stripped SR101 thread and see my stripped Jackmandu. I stripped it and tried to force a patina. Didn't work very well (which surprised me given the warnings of rusting). I the left it alone until I cut some hot steaks from the grill with it, same weekend I stripped it. BAM! Instant patina. I have t done anything with it since. Carried it a bit (humid around here), cleaned it when used, and it has been fine.

I sold it like a dummy. But when I had a my 1311 it was stripped and had a forced patina. I had no trouble with rust, use it, wash it with dish detergent, put on a super then coat of frog lube.

I just apply a little Hoppes gun oil to most of my fixed blades, if I see a tasty critter that needs carving I'll wash the blade off first.
