Please recommend a good survival/tactical knife

ha ha... touche.

But I would imagine in a fighting knife, rubber would have several advantages over other substances...

Its certainly offers a good gripping surface, especially when wet...

Just ask your car :D

Canvas Micarta and texturized G10 are just as good, but it looks quite better and are probably tougher.

I guess that is why there are so many different knives - because there are so many different opinions on that subject. Perhaps a topic for a different sub-forum, but I would be interested to hear Mr. Ranger's reasoning on that.

I happen to prefer the rubber handle knives. The Falkniven S1 in particular. But that is just my preference.

It isn't so much the rubber itself, as the usual shape of the "rubber" handles. These are great "outdoor/hunting" knives, it's just that the handle shapes make them poor "tactical" knives (where you may very well be under the stress of someone trying to kill you!).

One of the most common injury wtih knives, is to the hand of the person weilding the knife! Their hand slips off the end of the grip and out onto the blade. Compare the grips on the "rubber" knives, to the grip on the Nimravis or Presidio for example:

OK the bear is a good size but stupidly over priced im my opinion...go for a Bob Dozier, custom knife, great size and sheath, wonderful reputation, and much better prices...
Or if custom is not your cup of tea then try a Zero Toleerance 0121, not much tougher-except the 0100 but this is definately a bigger knife-too big in my opinion...

I think the S1's handle has just enough of a finger guard to be functional but not so much that it is cumbersome. Plus the traction that comes from the rubber material makes up for allot IMO...

However, I have the same concerns RR does about slipping forward for allot of other blades. Particularly the micarta handled knives that have no finger guard at all to speak of. YMMV.

I don't think this would be a problem with the Buck Nighthawk, and it's handle is made of rubber (or something rubber-like).

A OVB Fisk Bowie knife. It can cut like a buzzsaw, and is heavy duty. Nicely balanced and very quick in the hand. For tactical use it is devastating. For survival use it can cut branches, slice food, defend against animals, etc.
