To ALL my CRK Brothers and Sisters, Please send some prayers out to my dog Belle. As nearly all of US here are CRK owners, we are also Pet owners. Pets that are so much more than just Pets, They Are Part Of OUR Family.
Belle has been 100% GO since the moment I got her 12 years ago. All checkups made yearly, the works. I came home from work yesterday and she was listless all of a sudden. Sometimes in the morning, she is not as jumpy as we all used to be, but she was up and about. When I got up in the afternoon, she was listless even more and unmovable. I called my Vet immediately, but they were closing and recommend the Animal Hospital as they can provide more care than they could provide. I carried her to the car ( 65 lbs and solid muscle ). Carried her into the hospital. They did multiple tests and found that she has a small tumor on her spleen, which is bleeding into her stomach slightly. Through ALL the tests, they said she was still wagging her tail, It Never Stops...!!! There were two options, emergency surgery if it looked like it was continuing to bleed, or they could put it off till morning if she stabilized......OR.......put her down.
It was an extremely tough decision. She has been with me during most of my life's major changes and has always been by my side. I could NOT let her down so easily. SO, we opted for the surgery.
The hospital called this morning and said surprisingly enough, the bleeding clotted and she was up running around, tail wagging; again It never Stops...lol...!!! They went ahead with the surgery to remove the spleen and the small tumor that was causing the bleeding this afternoon. They just called several hours later and stated they found nothing else wrong or unexpected other than some small nodules on her liver. They did a biopsy on them, but also said they could just be from age as well as that is normal. They said she is up and walking around.
In most cases, this is more severe and putting them down is required as ironically at this same time last year we had to put our Border Collie "Sparky" down for the same thing, though his condition was far worse. They stated he would never survive the surgery..........With Belle, since she is extremely healthy, they stated that she has an excellent chance at recovery. Life expectancy ranges from 2 weeks to 9 months, but most cases are more severe and they find more things wrong when they go in. With Belle, its looking good. My Vet called late last night out of the blue and asked for an update and what we decided to do. Since her bloodwork was perfect, he said we made the right decision to go ahead with the surgery as they have had excellent results with such cases.
Thanks for listening to me ramble, but I feel we are ALL one little family here on the Chris Reeve Knives Forum Page.
If all goes well, she will be home tomorrow getting babied. Funny my newest CRK is a Large Silver Dog Paws Sebenza.
